Rangers and Islanders -- one of the best sports rivalries.
Rangers / Islanders in my opinion are one of the best rivalries in sports, if not the best. Who can forget the Eric Cairns and Sandy McCarthy showdown(s)? Or perhaps Theo Fleury goading of the entire Islander bench to fights? Never a dull moment -- and of course, the players play with an extra incentive to try to claim bragging rights.
Back to the Rangers, who are now tied for first in the Atlantic with the Flyers – who thought they’d be in position to wrestle for first place? Everyone thought they’d finish the year in the cellar, perhaps jockey for draft position at this point of the season and wait a few years for the young kids to grow up. They look like legit cup contenders, and oh by the way, the Blueshirts and Flyers square off on Saturday to settle who takes over that Atlantic division.

Weight to Carolina
Janet,
The Sens are saying that they didn't want to pay over $2 million for a rental. Time will tell if they were penny wise and pound foolish.

Hurricane Doug -- Fantasy fortune or folly?
Doug Weight officially landed Monday in the Carolinas, giving the upstart Hurricanes fantastic depth up the middle in a run toward Lord Stanley. Fantasy implications of this deal are complex as Weight's short-term value has gone sky-high with the deal. Unfortunately for Weight owners and for the Canes, Weight has publicly indicated on many occasions that he will only sign with one team -- his beloved Blues -- in the off-season, leaving him a three-month rental. Those of you carrying a Weight on your squad should seriously examine your own trade potential, particularly if you are already out of the running in your league. His value will never be higher than it will be over the next few weeks and your own windfall in a trade package to a contender will be far more than a fighter, a journeyman AHLer and a Swedish forward who never intends to play in North America. Dangle him and then pull the trigger for something big.

Preds...
Okay, can this team compete deep in the playoffs in the Western Conference. True they've fed on Columbus, St. Louis and Chicago, but those two wins in Detroit last week didn't look fluky. Now they've got Sillinger, a good two-way player and veteran, albeit one that no team seems to want to keep for a while. Vokoun in goal as well as Kariya, Sullivan and a good stable of offensive blueliners with Zidlicky and Timonen. Call me crazy, but I think the Preds could be a surprise this spring.
