Did Doug Wilson really need to trade for Vladimir Malakhov in the hopes of convincing him to play. Honestly, I couldn't care less as the Devils look now to be out of salary cap purgatory while still awaiting word on whether they can take Mogilny off the books. That would be $7.1 million, more than enough to sign Gionta, Martin, Hale and others. Fahey likely won't see the big club as he's probably no better or worse than the other three rookie blueliners they have and Korolyuk is in Russia. Malakhov just didn't adjust to the league last year and the shady business about his retirement. Depending on who you believe, the Devils said he retired, while Malakhov and his agent maintain it was a leave of absence. Regardless, the Devils have made a huge step to rectifying arguably the league's messiest cap situation.
