10 Straight...And Counting
| The Buffalo Sabres have won 10 straight games to open the season, tying the 1993-94 Maple Leafs for the NHL record. The Sabres have 15 straight regular season wins, dating back to last season, but for record-keeping purposes, the league only counts streaks that occur within one season. The longest winning streak ever is the 17-game stretch by Pittsburgh in 1992-93. This spurred me to research some of the great NHL team records. I'm not sure that any of these will ever be broken, especially now in an era of increased parity and just simply more teams than in the old days. Did you know: Philadelphia was unbeaten for 35 straight games in 1979-80, the Penguins won 14 consecutive playoff games in 1993 and Montreal won 10 straight overtime games* in the 1992-93 postseason? It's worth mentioning that the only team I mentioned which won the Stanley Cup that season was the 1992-93 Canadiens. *This only counts games that went to overtime -- they did have some regulation losses mixed in

New Sabres Logo
I actually happen to like the Sabres' new logo, but this satirical cartoon from the CBC is pretty funny: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/instigator/gfx/2006-07/sluggo.html

Blackhawk Down
One has to feel sorry for the Chicago Blackhawks. In a span of a few days, they lose their top line center Michal Handzus for the season with a torn ACL, their top line and league-leading-scorer right wing Martin Havlat for 2-3 weeks with an ankle sprain, and starting goalie Nikolai Khabibulin indefinitely with a fractured finger. Handzus and Havlat represent 25% of the team's total points, and Havlat and Khabibulin alone represent almost $13 million in salary. And all this after a decent 4-4-0 start where they found themselves second in the Central division after years of mediocrity, even if after just eight games. Factor in that young gunner Tuomo Ruutu is out with a sprained knee, and the Hawks could very well have their three top forwards out. It looks like it's going to be another wasted season for Chicago.

Buffalo Buzzsaw
Yeah, the Sabres are a buzzsaw right now, Pianow. I've been following Buffalo teams for over 30 years, and this is the first time, I believe, where it's pretty clear-cut that a Buffalo team is #1 in its sport at a given point in time. The 1990 Bills rolled through the end of the season, but San Fran was still probably the cream of the crop until the Giants knocked them off. The University of Buffalo football team is on pace for a bowl game in 2025.
