Box Scoring the NHL

Penguin Ryan Whitney is out of the lineup again on Thursday. He took part in the pre-game skate but decided not to give it a go. Farewell Eric Lindros. I'm surprised at the positive tone announcers and fans are giving him. It always seemed like he was the poster child for underachieving, pouting and overpaid players. I'll remember two things about Lindros. One, the maniacal hockey card craze he caused with Score brand rookies. I used to see adults searching through packs for his rookie card when I had a mall sportscard business -- one guy was so proud of cheating he showed me the five packs & five Lindros cards he bought. Hope he sold them before now! Two, Lindros was a huge target and I'll always remember the hit Darius Kasparaitis put on him. That and Scott Stevens' knock. Doesn't look like the Carey Price - Tuukka Rask matchup is going to happen (Tim Thomas is in goal again). Get used to the spelling on Tuukka, let's hope it's not "N-i-i-t-t-y-m-a-k-i". Congrats to Mike Modano, the all-time leading American scorer. But Phil Housley? A defenseman? Thank goodness a forward finally has the mark. Posted by Topper at 11/8/2007 4:33:00 PM

Box Scoring the NHL

Pens-Flyers: The Ming Dynasty lasted from 1644 to 1912; the Dany Sabourin Reign may have lasted from last Thursday through tonight as he's already given up two goals in the first five minutes of the game. Pittsburgh needs Marc-Andre Fleury to stand up and be accountable. I'll be happy if Sabourin serves as a capable backup from here on out. Scottie Hartnell picked up just his third assist (with no goals) in 13 games. It's hard to believe he's in his seventh full NHL season and he's still only 25. The question is, has he already peaked?? Nothing like a game-time scratch to foul up fantasy teams. Ryan Whitney (groin) was expected to play tonight. The Penguins wisely scratched him as it's always good to wait until a player says he's 100 percent coming back from a groin injury...and then wait another game. Just wish the Pens would have let us know he wasn't going to play. Pens players Talbot, Laraque and Hall passed out free pizza and t-shirts to college students waiting in line for tickets this afternoon. Nice touch. Posted by Topper at 11/7/2007 4:27:00 PM
