Apparently some of us are crazy enough to live blog during a 15-team, mixed-league staff auction. With that, let me open this up and fire when ready, amigos.

Comments....

My first 2: Utley at $44 and Russ Martin at $29. Love both but no bargains there.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 4:36:00 PM

I thoguht I did well with Vlad $32 and Magglio $26, but I have no idea why I allowed myself to go $22 on Chipper, who I realize has an at-bat O/U of about 425.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:39:00 PM

Ryan Braun for $35 is the SOD so far.
Posted by Dalton Del Don at 2/19/2008 4:41:00 PM

My first relative bargain: a $31 Teixeira.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 4:43:00 PM

Top prices so far: Reyes 53, A-Rod 50, Wright 46, Crawford 45, Cabrera 45, Utley 44, Santana 44, Hanley 42, Rollins 41, Holliday 41. Somehow Braun went for 35, a room-agreed bargain.

Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:43:00 PM

Happy to get Arod at $50 when Reyes went for $53
Posted by hschindel at 2/19/2008 4:44:00 PM

I still have no players. I'm going to look like a genius or an idiot.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 4:45:00 PM

Peavy 35, Hamels 29, Bedardf 29, Webb 27, Sabathia 25.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:45:00 PM

I took a phone call and lost the chance to block Stopa on Atkins, 22. Ack!
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:47:00 PM

Byrnes 17, Rios 23, Jeter 21. The early spending created a nice buying pocket now.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:54:00 PM

One I need to take advantage of...
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 4:56:00 PM

Hughes 14, Roberts 22, Bartlett 4. That looks pricey on Hughes to me.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 4:57:00 PM

K-Rod at 20. I think closers are overpriced.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 4:57:00 PM

I fought for BJUpton but to Dalton for 32
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:04:00 PM

enough counting stats for Markakis to justify my $27? not so sure.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 5:04:00 PM

Regarding Hughes and Markakis - the fact that it's a keeper league justifies a little bit of a premium there, methinks. That said, Rios at $23 looks like a pretty good buy right now, as an outside observer.
Posted by Erickson at 2/19/2008 5:05:00 PM

Juan Pierre for $10? The hatred runs deep.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 5:07:00 PM

Pierre at 10. Everybody hates him so much that nobody wanted to bid.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:07:00 PM

what can I say, overpaid for Reyes and Wright, but if Reyes gets 75 steals and 120 runs, won't complain.
Posted by airjan23 at 2/19/2008 5:09:00 PM

Happy with Granderson at 24 and Nathan at 19, Webb is ok at 27
Posted by airjan23 at 2/19/2008 5:12:00 PM

And if A-Rod gets 54 HR, 156 RBI, 24 steals, 143 runs, and a .314 average again this year, I won't complain.
Posted by bscwik at 2/19/2008 5:13:00 PM

My problem with Reyes and Wright is that is a lot of money invested in steals. If you're going with Reyes, I wouldn't have spent for another guy who gets 30 steals.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:13:00 PM

Not a big Jose Guillen fan, but at $7, I'm now a quasi-fan.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 5:13:00 PM

Jeff baby, tell me Brandon Phillips is worth 28.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:13:00 PM

ARod's 2007 was far superior to his 2004-2006. He could duplicate 2007, but some regression to the mean is more likely.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:15:00 PM

Know your software before drafting. I repeat: Know Your Software. I like Juan Pierre for $10, he makes so much dinero that he's got to play somewhere, even if Kirk Gibson has a better arm than he does -- today.
Posted by jtopper at 2/19/2008 5:15:00 PM

Question to Jeff or other observers:

Santana 44, Peavy 35, Bedard 29, Hamels 29, Webb 27, Sabathia 25, Beckett 23, Lackey 21, Smoltz 19, Shields 17, Hughes 14

Who are the deals so far?
Posted by bscwik at 2/19/2008 5:15:00 PM

Loved Granderson and Markakis but took myself out of the running after I bought Carlos Lee for $32
Posted by jtopper at 2/19/2008 5:16:00 PM

Mauer at 23. Didn't want to (Dalton bid me up) but it ties into my strategy here.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:18:00 PM

Wow, McCann for 26 right after Mauer at 23. He was the last top-tier C.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:21:00 PM

wright hits homers as well
Posted by airjan23 at 2/19/2008 5:27:00 PM

halladay at 16 got 2 compliments. that's always nice
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:28:00 PM

I know Wright hits homers too but some of his value is tied into SBs
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:29:00 PM

Got Oswalt at 18 not too bad - COvers for crawford at 45
Posted by jem37 at 2/19/2008 5:31:00 PM

Right now I'd trade teams with Dalton (McCann 26, BJUpton 32, Sizemore 39).
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:31:00 PM

Wagner at 15. I still think closers are overpriced; we'll see what they go for later.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:32:00 PM

Dalton got Lincecum at 17, nice. Just three more than Hughes.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:35:00 PM

I also liked Oswalt at 18. There are some fleas but wow, that's a discount.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:36:00 PM

Okay, Haren, Harang went for 18. Maybe it's time for me to stop blogging and start paying attention.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:37:00 PM

I would have gone to 19 on Haren and Harang but already have 2 SPs.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:38:00 PM

that time I went 19 on CYoung
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:42:00 PM

Chad Billingsley 17, Chris Young 19. I've lost my feel for the room. I still don't have a pitcher. Looks like Tim Wakefield is gonna be my staff ace. Hey Jim Bouton, you still pitching?
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:42:00 PM

Rivera at 17 - the trend continues
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:43:00 PM

Helped my daughter open a jar of peanut butter and missed out on a $23 Weeks

Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 5:47:00 PM

KEscobar at 6. Hard to know how high to go on him
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:51:00 PM

Wow, Stopa just bid $30 on Cano. Wow!
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:54:00 PM

Tejada a stink-price steal at $12.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 5:55:00 PM

probably a mistake on Cano. we'll see I guess.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 5:56:00 PM

Adrian Gonzalez, a really nice buy at 17 for Stopa.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 6:05:00 PM

Kinsler 16! A lot of people hate themselves now.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 6:09:00 PM

Kazmir at 19
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:09:00 PM

Yeah, I hated Cano at 30 when Kinsler went for 16. That's my only regret right now.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:12:00 PM

At the first break, I thought I was being thrifty with the money but Bret has $124 left and has bought only three players. Dawgs have $140 left and have bought only 4 players. Interesting to see how their lineups look at the end, esp. on offense with most of the hitting stars having been taken. (best offensive players left are guys like Ryan Zimmerman, Jason Bay, Dan Uggla, Paul Konerko).
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:17:00 PM

At the break I have Mauer 23, AGonzalez 17, Cano 30 (yikes), Atkins 22, CGuillen 20, JShields 17, Halladay 16, CYoung 19.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:18:00 PM

Todd Jones at $5. I might be punting saves at this rate.

Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:28:00 PM

Longoria at 14. Wow.
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:31:00 PM

zimmerman at 16 is my best pick yet
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:40:00 PM

Zimmerman was an obscene bargain at 16. I hate myself. John Maine for 15 looked much too high to me.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 6:43:00 PM

bidding war for Maine between Jan and Martorano, Martorano got him at 15, what was I thinking?
Posted by airjan23 at 2/19/2008 6:43:00 PM

You were thinking, ha ha, watch him bid 15.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 6:46:00 PM

borowski for 5?
Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 6:54:00 PM

Sheffield, Chipper, Griffey. How old are my study materials?
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 7:07:00 PM

And now Pedro (is he worth 9?). Good grief.
Posted by spianow at 2/19/2008 7:08:00 PM

Never thought I'd wind up with Julio Lugo, but was in need of SB and at $6, I'll roll the dice.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 7:38:00 PM

Ankiel for $4. I'm definitely talking about this in the article.

Posted by MPStopa at 2/19/2008 7:45:00 PM

Brandon Phillips should be worth that - he benefits from the ballpark, but hey, he just signed a four-year deal - he ain't going anywhere.

Longoria at $14 is very nice too - not necessarily for this year, but hey, in a keeper league? Sign me up.

Love Zimmerman at $16 also.

Posted by Erickson at 2/19/2008 8:32:00 PM

the computer picked giles for me, i dont like him and he threw off my entire draft
Posted by djm1144 at 2/19/2008 8:43:00 PM

Instead of starting the bidding for pedro feliz at 2 , i started it at 1 and then upped it to 3, my 2 biggest mistakes, letting the computer bid on giles nad taking feliz at 3

Posted by djm1144 at 2/19/2008 8:44:00 PM

Billy Butler for $2, Brandon Wood for a buck...nice endgame value here.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 8:49:00 PM

my pitching has issues - Buehrle, Blanton, RJ, S. Baker, I. Kennedy, Meche, Pervival, Borowski, Saito. Fortunately I have the depth to deal.
Posted by vtadave at 2/19/2008 8:50:00 PM

What depth to deal?
Posted by bscwik at 2/19/2008 10:12:00 PM

Crazy night - got started two hours late and still finished nicely in less than 4.5 hours

Got some nice value: Garko 8, C. Jackson 1, O. Cabrera 9, CJ Wilson 1, A. Miller 1, Zumaya for keeper value at 1.

Four closers plus plenty of speed. Need to make sure I get starters and innings eaters for the 900.
Posted by jem37 at 2/20/2008 5:47:00 AM

C - Lo Duca (1), Suzuki (1)
1B - Konerko (13)
2B - K. Matsui (4)
3B - A. Rodriguez (50)
SS - H. Ramirez (42)
CI - Glaus (6)
MI - E. Aybar (1)
OF - Bay (16, I think), Wells (16, I think), Alou (4), D. Roberts (1), Duncan (3)
UT - Sexson (2)
P - J. Santana (44), C. Zambrano (18), Pettitte (4), Garza (3), Slowey (3), Carpenter (2), Street (9), Capps (10), B. Wilson (4)

I think that's a pretty good pull for a 15-team league; need some help from some rebound seasons from Konerko, Glaus, Bay, Wells, Duncan, and/or Sexson.
Posted by bscwik at 2/20/2008 7:25:00 AM

Carpenter at $1, not $2
