ANALYSIS
Although Ferguson was mostly ineffective on the ground Saturday, his pass catching ability out of the backfield was on full display as he reached 100 yards receiving for the first time since the 2013 season. If not for a shoulder injury that sidelined him for three games, Ferguson could have reached the 50-reception mark for the third consecutive year in 2015. The senior tailback will play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January.

Ferguson (5-10, 195) was strong as a runner in 2013, making the most of his 141 carries by totaling 779 yards (5.5 YPC) and seven touchdowns. What's unique about Ferguson, though, is his skill as a receiver, as he caught 50 passes for 535 yards and four scores last year as perhaps the nation's best receiving RB. He had a solid finish in the final eight weeks of last season, running for 583 yards (5.3 YPC) and seven touchdowns while adding 38 catches for 273 yards and a touchdown. That's good for about 16.7 fantasy points per game, or 21.5 in PPR. The Illinois offense could struggle this year, and Ferguson will probably be a modest touchdown source, but the yardage and reception totals should remain strong.

Ferguson will reprise his role as the lightning to Donovonn Young's thunder this season, being called upon to spell the bulkier Young to add a touch of speed to the team's offense. Although both players were roughly equal contributors in the receiving game, Young outpaced Ferguson in carries (131 to 75) and rushing yardage (571 to 312) and remains the more enticing fantasy option of the two as the Illini's go-to red zone back. Ferguson sat out the team's spring game with an ankle injury, perhaps putting him slightly behind in picking up Bill Cubit's passing-friendly attack.

Ferguson totaled just 52 yards (3.7 YPC) last year, but he figures to head into 2012 in a two-back rotation with Donovonn Young in a prominent role for Illinois. He received good reviews for his offseason performances and should emerge as the team's top elusive and pass-catching option out of the backfield, while Young provides the power and goal-line work. That goal-line work taken by Young should limit Ferguson's upside out of Big Ten-only leagues, though.
