Katz (ankle) will miss the rest of the year, the North County Times reports.

It's a huge loss for San Diego State, as Katz was having an excellent year. Adam Dingwell did just fine as a replacement against Nevada, though.

Katz was ousted from the starting role at Oregon State last year by Sean Mannion, but that doesn't mean he won't be a good player by San Diego State's standards. The Aztecs will turn to Katz this year now that Ryan Lindley is gone to the NFL, and Katz arrives with some very nice targets to throw to. Gavin Escobar is one of the nation's best tight ends, and the wideout trio of Colin Lockett, Dylan Denso and Brice Butler is quietly very good. His upside figures to be limited, but between his favorable surroundings and subtle running skills, Katz could emerge as a decent fantasy backup and matchup-based starter in most formats. He should probably be drafted in MWC-only leagues at the least.
Katz was quite unremarkable in his first year as a starter, throwing 18 touchdowns to 11 interceptions while averaging just 6.8 yards per pass attempt. With the loss of Jacquizz Rodgers and the uncertainty surrounding the status of James (knee), things might get rougher in 2011. He could definitely improve, but he's generally not worth approaching outside of Pac-12-only leagues.
Katz hasn't been especially productive in his career to this point and isn't an exceptional prospect, but he enters a very favorable offense loaded with playmakers. The Rodgers brothers and Joe Halahuni should make this ideal job training for Katz, though the sophomore shouldn't be expected to match the produciton of Sean Canfield from last year.
