Past Fantasy Outlooks
2013
2012
2011
Martinez deserves a fair amount of credit for making significant progress as a passer in 2012, and the fact that he did so gives reason to hope for even more improvement in his senior season. He threw for 2,871 yards (7.8 YPA), 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 14 games last year while running for 1,019 yards (5.2 YPC) and 10 touchdowns, and he'll have almost all of his offensive line back this year. After previously struggling against competent defenses, Martinez was surprisingly rather matchup-proof in 2012, putting up big fantasy numbers even against the likes of Ohio State, Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin, and his running ability almost always grants him huge numbers against weak defenses.
It sure is ugly when he throws the ball, but Martinez is a standout runner who does just enough to hide his passing limitations to be an effective starter in Nebraska's system. He threw for 2,089 yards (7.3 YPC), 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2011, and he ran for 874 yards (4.6 YPC) and nine touchdowns. He's only useful against defenses that are vulnerable to his running ability, but he has huge upside on those weeks. He should be a good play in games against Southern Mississippi, UCLA, Arkansas State, Idaho State, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Minnesota, but he's probably not a wise start against Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State or Penn State.
Martinez is an injury worry after ankle troubles derailed the second half of his 2010 season, but the incredible upside he displayed prior to that point makes him a tempting target at the top of drafts nonetheless. He showed Denard Robinson-like upside in the beginning of the year, running for 737 yards and 12 touchdowns in the first five games. If his health could be guaranteed, Martinez would be worth ranking higher. Things being as they are, however, you want to make sure you land a reliable QB2 if you invest in Martinez.
