Russell (shoulder) will not play again for Mississippi State, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports.
ANALYSIS
Russell had labrum damage that necessitated surgery, ending his season and Mississippi State career. He'll probably get some looks as an undrafted free agent in the NFL. Dak Prescott will start against Rice in the team's bowl game.

The fifth-year senior is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the SEC and showed dramatic improvement from 2011 to last season. He played in all 13 games and more than doubled his passing yards (2,897) and tripled his touchdown passes (24). Russell has great size (6-foot-4, 220) for the position and will be expected to lead the Bulldogs’ offense in 2013. He’ll be tested right off the bat, as Mississippi State meets Oklahoma State on August 31 in Houston.
After sitting behind Chris Relf the past two years, Russell finally gets the starting role in 2012 and figures to break out as a fantasy factor while he's at it. Although he has some mobility to his game, Russell is a sharp contrast to Relf because he's a passing quarterback rather than an option one, and Russell's installation as starter will make the Bulldogs much more pass-happy in 2012. After averaging 8.0 yards per pass and throwing eight touchdowns to four interceptions last year, Russell needs to be owned in SEC-only leagues, and he's probably a decent bench investment in all other formats, too.
Russell is a big-time recruit who Mississippi State has good reason to be excited about, but they probably hope he doesn't have to play much this year. If he does, it means that starter Chris Relf is injured or struggling, which obviously wouldn't be good news. If Relf does struggle, though, Russell is someone to watch closely on what is an offense with more talent than most might suspect.
