Tompkins' move toward the defensive side of the ball does not seem like the result of poor play at running back last year. He was only given six carries for 16 yards early on in the season against Youngstown State and received little to any playing time after that. With big names like Jeremy Langford and Nick Hill receiving the majority of the carries last year, along with having more experience than Tompkins, the choice to move to defense could result in more playing time for the now former running back.
