Past Fantasy Outlooks
2014
2013
2012
Although he doesn't get a lot of targets in Stanford's run-heavy offense, Montgomery is a major fantasy factor due to his rare big-play ability. At 6-2, 215, he is one of the nation's best open-field runners. He supplemented his 958 yards (15.7 YPC) and 10 touchdowns as a receiver with 159 yards (12.2 YPC) and two touchdowns on the ground last season, as well as two kickoff returns for touchdowns. With Stanford relatively thin at running back this year, third-year starting quarterback Kevin Hogan might see more pass attempts than he had last year, which would be good news for Montgomery's value.
The Cardinal’s top five leading receivers from last season are gone, leaving Montgomery as the apparent number one option in 2013. The 6-foot-2 Dallas native caught 26 passes for 213 yards last year but failed to reach the endzone. Stanford has traditionally focused on tight ends in the passing game, but Montgomery is one of the most athletic wideouts the team has had and will help take some of the pressure off of inexperienced tight ends Matt Kasner and Luke Kaumatule.
Montgomery was one of the top wideout recruits from 2011, and he didn’t disappoint as a true freshman for Stanford. Even in a deep group of pass-catchers including Coby Fleener, Griff Whalen, Chris Owusu, Levine Toilolo and Zach Ertz, Montgomery made his mark with 13 receptions for 197 yards and two scores in the last two games of the year, adding a 34-yard touchdown run and a kickoff return touchdown earlier in the season, too. Fleener, Whalen and Owusu are gone this year, leaving room for Montgomery to take a bigger workload.
