Ferguson announced his retirement Thursday, USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Ferguson re-signed with the Dolphins in March, but was facing an eight game suspension heading into the 2010 season. "You get what you put into this game...it's been an absolute blessing to play this long," the 35-year-old tackle said. The Dolphins will look to nose tackle Randy Starks to fill the void left by Ferguson.

Ferguson suffered through a couple of injuries last season including his quad which eventually landed him on season ending IR. None of this really matters however as Ferguson is suspended for the first eight games of the season after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug.
Even at 34 years of age Ferguson still performs at an above average level. Nose Tackle is arguably the most important position in a 3-4 defense and the Dolphins don't have anyone else on the roster who can challenge Ferguson at this point in time.
Playing nose tackle in the 3-4, Ferguson won't record many sacks, but he's a solid run-stuffer. Although he'll start, he's likely to be used in rotation to keep him fresh, so don't count on a ton of tackles either. Nonetheless, his consistency makes him a decent low-end bye-week or injury replacement when no ends are on the waiver wire.

Ferguson will be the nose tackle in the Cowboys' new 3-4 defense -- don't expect much IDP production from him, but he's a solid anchor for what could be a surprisingly valuable team defense.
Started at defensive tackle in all 16 games for the second straight season in 2003 and set a career high with 106 tackles, tied a career mark with 4.5 sacks and also batted down four passes, forced a fumble and recovered another on the year.
