Foley had a disappointing 2005 due to an abdominal strain that bothered him throughout the entire season. Now healthy again, he hopes to return his 2004 form when he registered 10 sacks and five forced fumbles.
Foley was credited with being the emotional leader of the Chargers' defense in 2004. While teammate Donnie Edwards gets more national attention, it is Foley that provides the spark that makes the unit go. He had a career year with 10 sacks, two interceptions, five forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries and always seemed to be right in the middle of things. Foley hopes to improve upon those numbers this season with rookie Shawne Merriman adding some punch from the other outside linebacker position.
Foley was brought in as a free-agent from Houston and will be instrumental in helping the team switch to a 3-4 alignment. He will start at outside linebacker and is expected to pay dividends immediately.
