Wire will battle to backup Curtis Lofton as the team's middle linebacker this season. He's only worth a look if Lofton goes down with an injury.
Wire will backup Curtis Lofton at middle linebacker.
Wire has an outside shot at taking the starting job from Stephen Nicholas, but the former safety really has done nothing since starting 15 games and posting 96 tackles as a rookie in 2002.
Wire, normally a defensive back, was given some time at linebacker this past season after starter Angelo Crowell was lost for the season. He isn't very big, but still could get more seasoning at linebacker in 2007 because the Bills seem set at both safety positions. However, Wire is a valuable special teams player, which assures that he will make the team and see some opportunities for playing time if an injury occurs. Right now the Bills have others in mind for the starting LB spots, however.
Wire has gone from IDP sleeper a few years back to backup safety and special teams ace, meaning he has very little value to those in IDP leagues. Still, he's a smart, hard-working guy who the Bills prefer to keep in the fold. They'll give him an outside chance to win the open strong safety job, but more than likely that role will go to #1 draft choice Donte Whitner or free agent acquisition Matt Bowen.
Wire is the Bills' backup at strong safety after being pushed aside by Lawyer Milloy two seasons ago, but has done good work on special teams so the Bills want to keep him around. Wire now is under contract through 2006. He holds no fantasy value as a backup secondary man.
Wire's hope at fantasy value was lost when the Bills signe Lawyer Milloy just before the 2003 season started. Wire has done a nice job as a backup and special teams guy, but his IDP value is non-existent unless the Buffalo secondary gets hit by injuries.
