Newman has decided to retire after 15 NFL seasons, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Newman played for the Cowboys, Bengals and Vikings over the course of his career. In 16 games with Minnesota in 2017 he recorded 35 tackles and five passes defensed, including an interception. He turns 40 on Tuesday and may have called it a career because of his age or because he was likely to be relegated to a depth role with the Vikings in 2018.

Newman played in every game for the Vikings last season, logging 560 defensive reps in the process as he split time with Mackensie Alexander in the nickel cornerback role. However, Newman may have a reduced role at age 40 and with the Vikings taking Mike Hughes with the 30th pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Although 38 last season, Newman graded well in coverage. However, he'll likely have a reduced role at age 39 as 2015 first-round draft pick Trae Waynes will likely take over his starting cornerback job. Newman could shift to covering the slot with Captain Munnerlyn leaving to sign with the Panthers.
Newman, who turns 38 in early September, is the veteran among a fairly young Vikings secondary. Trae Waynes and 2016 second-round pick Mackensie Alexander figure to cut into Newman's snap count throughout the season. Newman racked up 62 tackles, three interceptions, and 12 passes defensed throughout the 2015 season despite his age suggesting a fallback. He has one year on his contract, and is set to become an unrestricted free agent heading into 2017 given he still has the itch to play.
Newman signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Vikings. He will likely compete with Captain Munnerlyn and Xavier Rhodes for a starting spot at corner, but will give the Vikings extra depth at the position either way.
After starting all of his career for the Cowboys, Newman will have to adjust to being primarily a back up for the Bengals. Nonetheless, Newman should see plenty of playing time and will post a respectable amount of tackles to go with a few interceptions, since teams seem to target him more as his speed declines.
Newman’s best days are behind him, but as the former burner becomes less effective in coverage, the more passes head his way. With that trend on display in 2010, Newman posted a career-high 77 solo tackles, 11 more than his previous best. He also pulled in five interceptions, another career high. As long as Newman is healthy, he should be targeted a fair amount and therefore be a decent IDP option in the secondary.
Newman once again missed time due to various injuries, but when he's healthy he's still the Cowboys' best cornerback. A third straight injury-plagued season could put his job in jeopardy, however.
Newman's IDP value takes a hit because he doesn't get very many tackles, but he is good for 3-4 INTs a season and is guaranteed a starting position with the Cowboys.
Teams continue to throw away from Newman, limiting him to just one INT in 2007, but he did score his first career TD on a punt return which could give him added value in some formats.
Newman's IDP numbers declined slightly for a second straight season, but his overall play improved. He could become more involved in the kick return game in 2006.
The Cowboys #1 cornerback, Newman didn't develop as much as the team hoped in his sophomore campaign, mainly due to a lack of help in the secondary. Look for him to step up in his third season.
Newman had an up-and-down (mostly up) rookie year until the playoffs, when he got taken back to school by Steve Smith. He's got the tools to be a true shut-down corner, but as yet lacks the experience.
The fifth overall pick in the 2003 Draft, Newman is a bit of a question mark as he played last year with a shoulder injury; had he not been hurt, he could have gone in the top four picks. Assuming Newman checks out healthy, he might see some time returning kicks in addition to playing cornerback.
