Bell logged another birthday, his 36th, in March, so it isn't a surprise that he's considering entering his post-playing days. Entering May's draft, the Cardinals' safety corps is populated by one fifth-year pro (Rashad Johnson) and a pair coming off their rookie campaigns -- Tyrann Mathieu (knee) and Rashad Johnson -- raising the likelihood that the position will be targeted. However, the primary wrinkle is Mathieu's recovery from torn knee ligaments, which keeps the door open for playing time in the defensive backfield. If Bell keeps himself in tip-top shape, Arizona may come beckoning once again, with a more guaranteed role in mind.

After eight seasons with the Dolphins, Bell packed his bags and headed to the Jets. It’s a one-year “let’s see how it goes” kind of deal for Bell in New York. He, LaRon Landry, and Eric Smith will all vie for the safety spots. Bell recorded 107 tackles (81 solo), two sacks, and an interception last season in Miami. Although Bell has consistently notched these triple digit tackles since 2008, he’s expected to keep regressing now that he’s 34 years old.

Bell is as good of a bet as any secondary player to hit triple-digit tackles, but he’s extremely one dimensional, and therefore doesn’t provide the big-play potential of other defensive backs. Still, with 335 tackles the last three years, Bell is enough of a standout as a run stopper to justify his selection as a DB1 in most fantasy leagues. On the other hand, there's reason to suspect Bell's career may trending downward as he heads into his age-33 season, as his tackle numbers have decreased from 120 to 114 to 101 the last three years.

Bell spent 2009 proving his breakout 2008 season was no fluke, following up his 120- tackle performance with another 114 — and with three interceptions added for good measure. The middle linebacker-esque tackle numbers put Bell in the top tier of IDP defensive backs. Don’t expect big numbers in other categories, though. Last season’s INT total was his career high and his first picks since 2005, and he generally doesn’t play close enough to the line to generate a lot of quarterback pressure.

After playing just one game and tallying five tackles in 2007 because of injury, Bell’s 2008 season was a comeback for the ages. Bell led the resurgent Phins D with 120 tackles, earning himself a healthy four-year, $20-million contract. It will be interesting to see how Tony Sparano deploys Bell and new free safety Gibril Wilson in the defensive backfield – between them, Miami’s two safeties tallied more than 250 tackles last season. Wilson’s presence could free Bell to get more involved in the pass rush – he averaged 2.5 sacks in 2005 and 2006.

Bell appears to be fully recovered from the torn Achilles' tendon he suffered in Week 1 of 2007. After excelling in offseason work, he has already regained the starting strong safety role. 70+ total tackles, a small handful of picks, and even a sack or two aren't too much to expect from him. Consider him a high second-tier option in the secondary.

After taking over the starting strong safety job from Travares Tillman in Week 9, fifth-year pro Bell became the most productive member of the Dolphins' secondary. He averaged six total tackles per game and also recorded a sack, two forced fumbles, and seven passes defensed as a starter in 2006. Entering 2007 as the starter, Bell will have the opportunity to extend his solid tackling numbers across an entire season.

Will compete with Deke Cooper for starting position at strong safety. In 2005, Bell recorded 21 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble, and one interception--terrific stats for a reserve that can improve if he starts. Bell is also a solid special teams contributor.
