Smith totaled 35 tackles (28 solo), including two for a loss, one fumble recovery and one interception over 16 games during the 2016 season.

ANALYSIS
The veteran tackling machine posted what was easily his lowest total of stops of any season in which he'd played at least 14 games. Smith held down the starting strongside linebacker job throughout the duration of the campaign, but the drop in his production was especially notable considering he was coming off the three most prolific seasons of his career from a tackles perspective. New defensive coordinator Mike Smith's scheme, which Smith had played in for four seasons (2004-07) in Jacksonville, seemed to funnel a great deal of the action to MLB Kwon Alexander, who posted 145 tackles. The 13-year pro notably wasn't the only established linebacker on the Bucs to see a precipitous drop in his numbers -- Lavonte David's 87 tackles also represented a low-water mark for him -- so the downturn likely wasn't exclusively age-related. However, Smith is set to be an unrestricted free agent, and given his largely disappointing season, the Bucs would currently appear unlikely to bring him back into the fold for 2017.

The 13-year veteran, who has extensive experience in new defensive coordinator Mike Smith's defense from their days together in Jacksonville, was brought in to offer a dependable presence on what is already a consideralby talented linebacker corps. Smith provided some sneaky IDP value over the last three seasons in Baltimore, totaling 372 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, nine sacks, four forced fumbles and five interceptions. While he'll have to share tackles with the dynamic duo of Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander in the coming season, Smith's savvy is expected to once again render him a productive option in IDP formats.

Teammate C.J. Mosley may be more heralded, but Smith has long been one of the league's best linebackers, as he showed last season in his second year in Baltimore. Smith notched more than 120 tackles in both his seasons, and he's set to take up a three-down role again in 2015. While his tackles provide a solid floor, Smith's playmaking ability gives him a decent ceiling. The last two seasons he posted six sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles. Age is the only concern — he turned 33 in April — but his recent success in a time-tested scheme does a lot to alleviate that worry.

Smith spent the entirety of his first six NFL seasons as one of the league's most underrated defenders, but general manager Ozzie Newsome knows how to spot talent, scooping up Smith for a starting linebacker role once Jacksonville let him hit free agency. Smith posted 12.5 sacks in his first five seasons, so it wasn't surprising to see him finish the 2013 season with five. He also forced two fumbles and intercepted three passes, returning one for a touchdown. Smith's tackle-count might be harmed slightly by the addition of 17th overall draft pick C.J. Mosley, but the Ravens' system obviously suits him well, and he has the skills necessary to make plays at an above-average level.

Smith was one of the better players on Jacksonville's defense for a long time, and the Ravens got him on the cheap after a groin injury derailed his 2012 season. He's a declining 31-year-old linebacker, which means that expectations are low, but it's possible that the Ravens could squeeze another year or two of good football out of Smith. He won't be handed anything but currently looks like a pretty good bet to start at Mike linebacker.

An eight-year starter for the Jaguars, Smith has been an underrated run defender in recent years, and arguably more productive than Paul Posluszny in 2011 – Smith had five more solo stops than Posluszny, whose bigger tackle total was largely padded by assists. Smith finished the year with 107 tackles (74 solo) as the Jaguars surprisingly allowed just 3.8 yards per carry, and he has quietly added a pass-rushing element to his game recently, posting 3.5 sacks in each of the last two years. With eight passes defended in 2011, there’s even some reason to hope for an interception surge from Smith.

Smith could end up at either middle or outside linebacker for Jacksonville in 2011, depending on what the team does with trades and free agency. Regardless, he likely will be little more than a steady but unremarkable producer across the board. With 204 tackles (159 solo), five sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles in the last two years, Smith can be expected to provide well-rounded production in basically every category – just don’t expect him to stand out in any regard.

Smith will start at outside linebacker, though his tackle numbers should be greatly reduced by the presence of Kirk Morrison.

Smith enters the 2007 returning to his natural outside linebacker role after filling in for the injured Mike Peterson in 2006. His 88 tackles in 2006 represented a career high, though we don't expect him to match those numbers with a healthy Peterson joining him along the linebacking corps.

Smith is still developing in this his second year in the league and will start for the Jaguars at outside linebacker.

Smith will be given the opportunity to win the strong side linebacker job to play along side Mike Peterson and Akin Ayodele.
