Poppinga agreed to a contract with the Cowboys on Monday, Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News reports.

ANALYSIS
With Bruce Carter (elbow) joining Sean Lee (toe) on IR, the Cowboys had little choice but to sign an experienced player like Poppinga. Expect him to be immediately thrown in the mix at linebacker, though the aging veteran hasn't played in 2012 and doesn't offer much IDP value at this time.

Will likely start the season as the club's starting strongside linebacker.

Poppinga's production fell off quite a bit in the new 3-4 defensive system in 2009. He's more of a special teams player at this point.

Poppinga will have competition for a starting LB spot this preseason and my end up as a special teams guy.

Poppinga is coming off a great sophomore season despite the huge amounts of pressure on the Packers defense. However, his numbers (60 total tackles, one sack) still shouldn’t be enough to put him in contention for an IDP role this year. Those types of numbers go to fellow LBs A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett.
