Byrd hasn't caught an NFL pass since 2007, but he'll be in training camp trying to revive his career and build rapport with his college quarterback Matt Leinart. He'll face an uphill battle, however, as he's currently the team's fifth tight end.
Byrd is trying to make a comeback after the Rams cut him in April of 2008, largely due to off-the-field problems. He is best suited as a blocker, the Cardinals have a crowded group of tight ends and they don’t throw to the position very often, so even if Byrd makes Arizona’s 53-man roster, he probably won’t make many catches.
Will compete with Aaron Walker for the 3rd TE spot.
The Rams traded last season’s starting tight end, Brandon Manumaleuna, after selecting Byrd (3rd round, USC) and Joe Klopfenstein (2nd round, Colorado) in the draft. St. Louis barely used its tight ends over the last three seasons – they were last in the league in 2005 and 2004 in percentage of receptions accounted for, and 30th in the same category in 2003 – but that should change under new head coach Scott Linehan, who plans to deploy plenty of two-tight end sets. Byrd was expected to compete with Klopfenstein for the starting job with the winner likely to have 40-50 catches in their first year. However, the emergence of veteran Aaron Walker moved Byrd down the depth chart to No. 3 tight end with absolutely zero fantasy value.
