ANALYSIS
Jennings wasn't listed on the Bucs' injury report this week, so it seems likely that coach Lovie Smith is simply dumping the veteran from his nickelback role. In five games this season, Jennings has collected 17 tackles and knocked down one pass, but hasn't provided the solid coverage on the outside that he displayed during back-to-back Pro Bowl seasons with the Bears. Mike Jenkins is in line to replace Jennings as the Bucs' third corner.

Jennings entered training camp in preparation for the second season of a four-year, $22.4 million contract extension he signed with the Bears in January 2014, but the deal was quickly written off by the new regime as a massive misfire. After logging 13 interceptions the previous two seasons, Jennings failed to pick off a single pass in 2014, while his total of 51 tackles was his lowest since 2007. With Jennings' production on the decline and his small frame representing an ill fit for new coordinator Vic Fangio's 3-4 press-coverage scheme, the Bears elected to release the cornerback in August. Jennings' considerable NFL experience should allow him to find work quickly with another club, but his days as a starter in the league could very well be over.
With Charles Tillman limited to eight games due to injuries in 2013, Jennings was tasked with matching up with the opposition's No. 1 receiver for half of the season, resulting in diminished effectiveness. He saw his interception total cut in half from nine to four, while his tackle total remained stable. Jennings is best utilized as a high-quality No. 2 cornerback, a role he should be able to reprise if Tillman can stay on the field with more regularity this season. The Bears will also added first-round selection Kyle Fuller to the cornerback mix during May's draft, whose presence could allow both Tillman and Jennings to remain fresher over the course of the campaign.
Jennings bounced back from a lackluster 2011 to lead the league with nine interceptions and make the Pro Bowl as a starter with fellow cornerback Charles Tillman. Jennings and Tillman should remain one of the better corner duos again in 2013, though given Jennings' lackluster career production to date, it wouldn't be surprising if his interception total dropped precipitously.
Jennings is a Lovie Smith favorite, but now has some competition at corner after the Bears signed Kelvin Hayden. While Jennings won't blow you away with stats, he'll continue to get lots of opportunities to make plays as teams shy away from Charles Tillman.
Jennings finished 2010 as the starting left corner, but will enter 2011 having to battle against Zack Bowman for that honor again.
Signed by the Bears this offseason to provide depth at cornerback.
Jennings started 12 games in 2008, filling in for the injured Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden. He played his first injury free season since being selected in the second round of the 2006 draft and was part of the Colts defensive crew that allowed the least passing touchdowns in NFL history. He recorded 68 tackles, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in the 2008 season and should be a solid option at third cornerback for the Colts in 2009.
Jennings will serve as one of the Colts' backups at cornerback behind Marlin Jackson and Kelvin Hayden and will compete with Dante Hughes for the designation as the team's nickelback.
Jason David and Nick Harper are gone, providing young players like Jennings with a chance to play their way into major roles in Indianapolis’ now-suspect secondary. Jennings figures to be one of the leading candidates for the nickel cornerback job, but doesn’t warrant consideration as an IDP.
He has the speed to add depth right away to the secondary, but will be hurt by his size (5-8, 180 pounds). He has a shot at winning playing time at nickelback if he's healthy this summer.
