KNew Orleans Saints
October 12, 2010
Carney has been released by the Saints, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
ANALYSIS
Carney got the start for New Orleans last Sunday and blew his opportunity by missing a 29-yard chip shot that would have given the Saints the lead in the fourth quarter. Garrett Hartley should step back into his starting role.

Entering his 17th NFL season, the 42-year-old Carney is a career 81.2 percent kicker, but the Saints offense scored 13 less TDs in 2005 than 2004. As a result, Carney dipped below 100 points in ’05 for the first time in five seasons. But the arrival of new quarterback Drew Brees, a backfield featuring Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush and a healthy Joe Horn, should improve the offense. The Saints brought in some competition for Carney, signing undrafted free agent Connor Hughes, who is Virginia’s all-time leading scorer.
The Saints have had a pretty steady offense the past four seasons, giving Carney enough value through extra points. He’s been a good kicker when given the opportunity, nailing 83 percent (102-of-123) in four seasons in New Orleans. Unfortunately, his field goal attempts have dwindled in recent years, dropping him to middle of the pack in scoring (102 and 104 points in 2003 and 2004, respectively).
Carney is averaging 115 points in his three seasons with the Saints. His production dropped off last year largely because the offense scored 92 fewer points in 2003, but Carney is a career 81.5 percent kicker, he kicks in a dome, and he should rebound along with the team’s offense. The Saints still have weapons, so Carney should get his opportunities.
Carney has been as consistent as anyone in the league while with the Saints. In two seasons, Carney has hit 88 percent of his field goals (58 of 66) and averaged 122.5 points. Playing in a dome is to his advantage, and the Saints can put points on the board, so Carney should continue his production.

Carney made field goals of 31 and 32 yards in Sunday's loss to Arizona, but he missed a 29 yard chippy in the fourth quarter which would have given the Saints the lead. His miss would be huge as the Saints were able to cut the deficit to three points in the waning minutes.
