Steltz (groin) was released by the Bears on Monday, ESPNChicago.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A highly-regarded special teams player over the past six seasons with the Bears, Steltz's slow return from offseason groin surgery probably contributed more than anything to his release. He's now presumably healthy after returning to action for last Friday's exhibition, which could allow him to garner interest elsewhere given his extensive experience.

Steltz reprised his role as a depth safety for the Bears in 2013, turning in negligible IDP production aside from a 12-tackle Week 13 performance vs. the Vikings, when he stepped in as a spot starter for the injured Major Wright. After a slew of additions to the safety ranks in the offseason, Steltz ultimately fell victim to the numbers game at the position after he was slow to return from groin surgery. He'll look for an opportunity elsewhere after he was released by the Bears in August.
An experienced backup and a linchpin of the Bears' special teams units, Steltz figures to fulfill a similar role this season.
Steltz is likely behind Major Wright for the starting safety gig this season, but given the revolving door at safety the past few years in Chicago, it would not be much of a surprise if he were able to carve out significant playing time.
Steltz will resume his depth role in the secondary, but also as an above average special teams contributor.
Steltz entered the 2009 offseason as the team's projected starting safety, but he spent much of last year in a reserve role, playing in 12 games and recording just 11 tackles. Steltz is unlikely to see more playing time this season following the offseason additions of safeties Chris Harris and Major Wright.
