Fiammetta (hamstring) re-signed with the Bears on Monday, ESPN Chicago reports.
ANALYSIS
It seems likely the Bears planned on bringing Fiammetta back all along after releasing him Saturday. The fullback was likely unavailable for the Week 2 tilt due to the hamstring injury, and with the status of receivers Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall up in the air, the Bears needed to create more roster flexibility temporarily. Assuming Fiammetta is creeping closer to full health, he'll serve as Matt Forte's lead blocker.

As the only fullback in training camp, Fiammetta appears to be a safe bet to win the job as Matt Forte's lead blocker in the run game. The Bears will very rarely call Fiammetta's number as a runner, and he's little more than a last resort as a safety valve for Jay Cutler in the passing game. He logged no carries and only five targets as a receiver despite starting 16 games last season.
With the release of Evan Rodriguez following his DUI arrest, Fiammetta is the lone fullback on the roster. Unlike Rodriguez, he's more in the traditional mold of a fullback as a road-grader in the run game and won't receive many touches offensively. Matt Forte should be the greatest beneficiary of Fiammetta's arrival.
Fiammetta was effective as a run blocker for Dallas last year, but his concussion history is a worry and might be the main reason why he was let go by Carolina and then Dallas. If he can stay healthy, though, he could help boost the Pats' rushing attack.
Fiammetta will be the starting fullback in 2011, but with DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson getting all of the carries, it is difficult to see Fiammetta even poaching a touchdown here or there.
Strong lead blocker but figures to get few touches.
Fiammetta is the Panthers' backup fullback, who will get the opportunity to learn the trade from veteran Brad Hoover before potentially taking over the starting job in 2010 or 2011.
