Moeaki was cut by the Bears on Saturday, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The roster move comes as a bit of a surprise, as after a solid preseason, Moeaki was expected to be the backup tight end behind Zach Miller. Rob Housler and Khari Lee will likely be fighting for that spot now.

In his first three seasons in the league, Moeaki played in two of those with a season on Injured Reserve sandwiched between them. In the two campaigns he played with the Chiefs, he was quite productive, averaging 505 receiving yards and two touchdowns. But after signing with the Bears, he’s now playing on his fifth team in five years, and he’s only posted 192 yards and two touchdowns in his last 17 games covering three years. Despite possessing high-level athleticism, his career has been marred by injuries, and he’ll be competing to be a backup behind Zach Miller. He would need a strong camp along with an injury to Miller to work his way into significant pass targets.
Moeaki will compete with Jacob Tamme and Levine Toilolo for snaps at tight end this year. Tamme appears to be the favorite to win the job, but Moeaki could earn some time in two tight end sets. Considering how awful the Falcons tight ends were last year, it's unlikely that Moeaki will produce much, especially if he's second on the depth chart.
Moeaki signed with the Bills last December after being released by the Chiefs when he suffered a fractured shoulder in training camp. He was a productive player in Kansas City before injuries derailed him, but he was waived by Buffalo in advance of Week 1.
After missing the 2011 season with a knee injury, Moeaki returned in 2012 to be the Chiefs' second-leading receiver, though his numbers were down from his promising rookie season in 2010. The problem for Moeaki was largely poor quarterback play. Moeaki is one of the league's most athletic tight ends, capable of making highlight-reel catches by using amazing body control to go up and get the ball. He suffered a preseason shoulder injury, however, and was subsequently released.
Moeaki tore his ACL in the final preseason game of 2011 and is on pace to return to full practice when training camp opens. If he can regain the form he showed during a surprising rookie season that saw him snag 47 passes for 556 yards and three scores, he could once again sneak up on the league with solid production. But given the upgrades that the Chiefs have made to their receiving corps and the injury history that plagued Moeaki during his career at Iowa, it goes without saying that he carries significant risk into just his third year as a pro.
Moeaki turned in a solid rookie season, finishing with 556 yards and three touchdowns. At times his highlight reel catches conjured memories of old No. 88 in the Kansas City offense. Those catches speak to his athleticism, which, along with a solid set of hands, set him up for decent production. It was disappointing for owners to watch Matt Cassel virtually ignore Moeaki in the red zone as he received only seven targets, and after catching two touchdown passes in the first three weeks, Moeaki had only one more the rest of the season. Perhaps that might change, however, now that Charlie Weis is no longer the offensive coordinator.
Kansas City rolled the dice by selecting Moeaki with the 93rd overall pick in the 2010 draft, given his recurring injury history. Moeaki missed significant time during his tenure at Iowa due to a variety of aliments but has the ability to be a deep sleeper in Charlie Weis’ offense. This is a case where there are more talented rookie tight ends out there, but Moeaki is in a situation where he can make an immediate impact.
