The Saints released Brown (calf) with an injury settlement Thursday, removing him from injured reserve, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.
ANALYSIS
Brown joined the Saints in May, adding a veteran presence to a receiving corps lacking in experience. However, he failed his pre-training camp physical due to a strained calf, which will bring his brief tenure in New Orleans to a close. The severity of the injury will likely determine when he receives a chance with another organization.

A third-round draft pick back in 2011, Brown has never caught more than 41 passes in a season as he's been a journeyman with his third team in three years. Injuries have been part of the problem, but he also failed to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way. With T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson and Donte Moncrief assumed to be Indy's top three wideouts, Brown will compete with a group that includes Duron Carter and Griff Whalen for the fourth spot on the depth chart.
Aside from a seven catch, 117 yard explosion in Week 7, Brown was mostly invisible during his second year in the NFL, which came as a big disappointment to a Chargers team that really needed him to step up. Malcom Floyd's return from a neck injury and a calf injury of his own, squeezed the wideout out the Chargers' pass-catching mix when roster cuts rolled around.
After showing some promising glimpses during his rookie season, Brown broke his ankle in training camp last year and never made it onto the field. At 5-11, 184, Brown is small and not especially fast, but he's a precise route-runner, has good hands and is unusually polished for his experience level. He should also be very much in the mix this season especially with Danario Alexander out for the season.
Hamstring and quad injuries limited Brown early in his rookie season, but he made an impact during a few midseason games. At 5-11, 184, Brown’s not much of a red-zone target, and he doesn’t have blazing speed. But he’s a precise route-runner, has good hands and is mature for his age and experience level. With Vincent Jackson gone and Antonio Gates always a health concern, the targets in San Diego are more wide open than usual. The oft-injured Malcom Floyd and free-agent signee Robert Meachem will probably get first crack, but Brown could very easily work his way into a prominent role.
The rookie out of San Diego State has some nice natural ability and would fit the system well, but the receiving corps is a bit crowded, and he is not assured of making the active roster out of the gate.
