McCarthy (shoulder) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
McCarthy suffered a shoulder injury during the Titans' preseason opener and has already undergone surgery to repair the ailment. Nonetheless, given the severity of the procedure, McCarthy has already been ruled out for the season and Tuesday's placement on injured reserve confirms that status.

McCarthy, who recorded racked up 55 tackles last season, was in line to compete for a starting slot at inside linebacker for the Titans, before he landed on injured reserve in training camp, ending his season.
McCarthy will look to bounce back off an injury-riddled season in which he only played in seven games because of ankle injuries and a concussion. He'll battle Moise Fokou for the starting job at middle linebacker.
McCarthy is a great athlete and was a productive player for Miami (FL) in college, but he fell to the Titans in the fourth round of the 2011 draft due to shoulder-injury concerns. With that in mind, McCarthy remains a durability risk as an IDP. Still, the excellent production he showed as a rookie last year and the departure of Barrett Ruud from Tennessee makes McCarthy one of the better high-upside IDP prospects heading into 2012. He will more than likely start at middle linebacker for the Titans, a role in which he totaled 63 tackles (50 solo), one interception and two forced fumbles over the final eight weeks of last season. McCarthy could approach 130 tackles in 2012, and he has the athleticism to make an impact in coverage and rushing the passer with a little luck.
The rookie should come in and make a contribution as a back up middle linebacker in a position that is very strong on the Titans defense.
