Toon (ankle) was signed to the Rams' practice squad Tuesday, ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner reports.
ANALYSIS
Toon was a fourth-round draft pick in 2012, but it isn't a good sign for his future that he was released by the receiver-needy Saints before the season. He's probably still recovering from an ankle injury and is unlikely to make an impact this season.

Injuries and competition for targets have largely made Toon an afterthought during his first three years in the league. Still, Toon averaged a robust 9.3 YPT on a 23-target sample over the season's last six games, and coach Sean Payton cited Toon's play over that stretch as a reason for not taking a single receiver during the draft. At 6-4, 218, Toon has ideal red-zone size, and while his 4.54 speed is below average, it's probably enough given that his height, weight and wingspan mean he requires less separation to make plays. With the Saints cleaning house the last two years, most recently trading superstar tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks and promising third-year wideout Kenny Stills to the Dolphins, Toon was set for a much larger role in one of the league's most dynamic passing offenses. Unfortunately, Toon's season again ended prematurely after he was injured in training camp this year, and he was eventually placed on injured reserve after clearing waivers.
Rookie Kenny Stills blew past him last year on the Saints' depth chart, but Toon's size, athleticism and adequate speed could allow him to take over the no. 3 receiver role now that Lance Moore is in Pittsburgh. Toon faces still competition for targets, however, with Marques Colston, Joseph Morgan and Brandin Cooks populating the wide receiver depth chart as well.
Toon missed all of last season with a foot injury, but will play as the Saints' No. 4 receiver in 2013. Yet with the Saints spreading the ball around to their tight ends and backs far more than most teams, even their No. 1 and No. 2 wideouts rarely put up huge numbers. Still, the potential for being one injury away from starting in a Drew Brees-led offense makes Toon worth considering, especially considering he's 6-2, 215, with good quickness and reliable hands. He's also incidentally the son of former Jets great Al Toon.
Taken in the fourth round, the son of former Jets great Al Toon is buried on the Saints depth chart behind Marques Colston, Lance Moore, Devery Henderson and even Adrian Arrington. And that doesn’t count the highly targeted tight end Jimmy Graham or tailback Darren Sproles. But Arrington is unestablished, Henderson is a one-dimensional deep threat and Colston and Moore have some injury history. There’s a lot to go around in the Saints historically prolific passing offense, and the 6-2, 215-pound Toon, who has good size, reliable hands and good quickness for a big receiver, is in an ideal spot should an opportunity arise.
