Sturgis was released by the Chargers on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers thought they'd finally obtained a reliable kicker when they signed Sturgis in March, but he's instead turned out to be another disaster, missing four field goals and six PATs in six games. Michael Badgley presumably will be promoted from the practice squad to replace Sturgis for Week 10 at Oakland. There's potential for fantasy relevance given that Badgley will be attached to one of the NFL's better offenses.

A poor kicker early in his career, Sturgis finally found his footing with the Eagles in 2016, but then landed on injured reserve with a hip injury after Week 1 in 2017. The offseason led him to Los Angeles, where he'll technically need to compete with Roberto Aguayo, the infamous 2016 second-round pick. He has upside, considering the Chargers have one of the stronger rosters in the league, led by Philip Rivers.
Sturgis is coming off his best year, as he set career highs in field-goal attempts, field goals made and field-goal accuracy. His 31 PAT attempts only ranked 24th, but his 41 field-goal tries were just one fewer than the league leader, helping him finish with the fourth most points overall. If Sturgis can keep his accuracy relatively level (it's increased every year of his career), he should be among the better fantasy options this season, as the Eagles' offense is likely to improve with quarterback Carson Wentz having a full year under his belt.
Sturgis took over the starting job in Week 4 last season after Codey Parkey suffered a season-ending groin injury, and the two are expected to compete for the job this summer. The Eagles are in a transitional year after firing head coach Chip Kelly, so relying on growth offensively may be misguided. The Eagles scored the second-most kicker points two seasons ago, when they scored the third-most points overall, but that cratered last year to 23rd. Strugis’ 81.8 percent accuracy was a career-high, but it ranked 26th in the league, which came a year after Parkey hit nearly 89 percent of his opportunities. Even if the offense does improve, there’s little reason to think Sturgis could be a difference-maker at the position given his pedestrian accuracy.
Sturgis entered training camp last year competing for the starting job again after a disappointing rookie season that saw him connect on only 76.5 percent of his field-goal attempts. He wasn't much better in his second season, as his 78.4 field-goal percentage placed him 28th. He's solid from shorter distances, but he hit only 60 percent of his kicks from 40-49 yards and half from beyond that. Sturgis lived on volume, tying for third in field-goal attempts and 10th in PATs, which helped him overcome his accuracy problem to finish 11th in scoring. Alas, he was beat out for Miami's kicking job this preseason by Andrew Franks.
As a rookie, Sturgis failed to live up the standard for first-year kickers set by Justin Tucker and Blair Walsh a season earlier, ranking 29th in the league with a 76.5 percent success rate on field goals. Sturgis still hummed along as a mid-pack point scorer until the Dolphins offense went AWOL over the final two games, affording him only one PAT and no field goal attempts. The Dolphins appear to trust Sturgis from distance (3-for-7 from 50-plus yards in 2013) and maintain confidence he’ll gain accuracy over time, but Ryan Tannehill & Co. must prove their late-season collapse was an aberration if the kicker hopes to become a useful fantasy commodity.
The Dolphins' fifth-round pick in this year's draft, Sturgis calling card is accuracy, as he finished top 10 in field-goal percentage in each of the last two seasons at Florida. While Dan Carpenter is still around to compete with Sturgis, Carpenter has been erratic since earning Pro Bowl honors in 2009, finishing near the bottom of the league in accuracy two of the last three seasons. Sturgis may lack Carpenter's leg strength, but his consistency and relative cheapness should allow him to secure the job. A weak Dolphins offense likely won't present many scoring opportunities, however Carpenter had only 26 PATs and 27 field-goal attempts last year.
