ANALYSIS
A 2000 first-round draft choice by St. Louis, Canidate had career highs in starts (10) and rushing yardage (600) last year in Washington but was released in the offseason after the Redskins acquired Clinton Portis from Denver. The Dolphins were told Sunday that Canidate is undergoing an examination Monday or Tuesday that will determine whether he needs season-ending foot surgery. If his foot is okay, the team may take a look at him in what could turn out to be open tryouts at Miami's training camp.

Because he couldn't hold onto the football enough, Canidate ultimately couldn't hold onto a roster spot with the Rams. Now he's the leader in the clubhouse for the starting tailback spot in Washington, not that we expect Steve Spurrier to run the ball any more often than he did last season. If Canidate can gain more confidence as a receiver and become more reliable picking up the blitz, he could develop into an every-down back for the Redskins. Washington doesn't dislike their other choices on the depth chart, Ladell Betts and Kenny Watson, but the Redskins wouldn't have made a move for Canidate if they were thrilled with the upsides attached to their other backs.
