Ike Taylor: Announces Retirement
CBFree Agent
April 14, 2015
Taylor announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 34-year-old Taylor may have struggled in his final few seasons, but he was the Steelers' top cornerback for the majority of his career. While he was never known for his hands and will retire with just 14 interceptions, Taylor was one of the league's better cover corners during his prime. With Troy Polamalu also retiring this offseason, the Pittsburgh secondary will be much younger in 2015. The Steelers figure to target a cornerback within the first few rounds of the upcoming draft, as their current options are underwhelming.

Taylor had a pedestrian 2013 season, as did most of the Steelers. He will return to start at cornerback this season after finishing the 2013 campaign with 63 tackles (52 solo).
Taylor returns fully recovered from the leg fracture that cut his 2012 season short.
The image of Demaryius Thomas stiff-arming Taylor to the ground on his way to an 80-yard touchdown reception in the 2011 playoffs is hard to forget. Taylor is coming off of the worst season of his career, having recorded just 42 tackles and two interceptions. He could lose some playing time in 2012 to Curtis Brown or Cortez Allen.
Taylor is a terrific, physical corner but has seen a drop in his fantasy stock due to consecutive seasons with no more than 62 tackles. Low tackles and interceptions don't make for a strong IDP candidate. He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, so 2010 will be an important year for him.
Taylor takes on the opposition’s top wideouts week after week, but that doesn’t always translate into prime fantasy numbers. This was the case in 2008 as his 65 tackles (down from 80 in 2007) didn’t even crack the top 50 among defensive backs and was his lowest output since becoming a starter in 2005. He should bounce back in 2009, but not necessarily enough to be more than a middle of the pack IDP option.
Taylor showed improvement in his second season as the Steelers' starting cornerback with 79 tackles, a sack and three INTs. His growth should continue in 2008 as he develops into a solid IDP option.
Taylor was beaten into submission by wide receivers after signing a huge contract prior to the start of the 2006 campaign. Pittsburgh is hoping that Taylor simply had an off year and will return to his 2005 form when he defended 23 passes (as compared to 15 in 2006). Taylor has little IDP value because of his hands of stone.
Taylor became the Steelers' shutdown cornerback in 2005. He held Cincinnati standout receiver, Chad Johnson, scoreless in three contests. A big hitter, Taylor intercepted one regular-season pass and two in the post-season. He could easily have finished with another half-dozen picks with better hands. Should he discover how to use his hands, Taylor could become a valuable IDP pick in 2006.
Taylor is at an important juncture in his career. Either he steps up as a starter at cornerback, or is relegated to backup duty. The Steelers used a second-round pick on him in 2003, with the intention of him taking over the starting role in a couple years. That time is now, and it's up to Taylor to prove his wares.
