Matthew (thumb) is still not practicing with the Packers.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Matthews continues to deal with a thumb injury originally suffered during Week 5 of last season. He was limited during OTAs and it's unknown when he'll return to practice. However, he went through light drills with linemen and linebackers Tuesday, so it appears to be only a matter of time before he's back in the mix.
Matthews didn't participate in Thursday's practice and doesn't expect to be anything more than limited during OTAs, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Regarding his late December thumb surgery, he stated, "It's been a long offseason with the surgeries and rehab and physical therapy. But it's definitely coming along. I'm doing everything I can to get out there as soon as I can. I don't see there being any hindrance towards the beginning of the season, towards camp. But obviously I am speaking a few months in advance."

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

When he initially sustained the broken thumb in Week 5, Matthews was held out four games in order to aid in his recovery. Upon his return, he donned a club yet still brought down the quarterback a number of times en route to 7.5 sacks in 11 contests. If he remains healthy in 2014, he should have more room to operate as a pass rusher following the addition of Julius Peppers in free agency.
Matthews (thumb) recorded 41 tackles (26 solo), a team-high 7.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles in 11 games played during the 2013 season.

Matthews, who underwent right thumb surgery prior to Week 17, has already been ruled out for the Packers' playoff opener, reports. Said coach Mike McCarthy, "Right now he's out for this week, and that's really what we're focused on...I really don't have a feel for Clay, as far as where he is. I really haven't even seen him to talk to him. You're always cautious with players after surgery. That's why he didn't travel with the team [to Chicago for the regular-season finale]."

Matthews led the Packers with 13 sacks in 2012, and will continue to provide a rush presence off the edge for the Packers.

Matthews registered just six sacks in 2011 and saw constant double-teams. The Packers drafted almost exclusively defense and hope that will free him up a bit more. He doesn't rack up big tackle numbers so his value takes a big hit if he isn't getting sacks.

Matthews has the look of the rare 3-4 outside linebacker with the ability to provide both tackle and sack production. Matthews finished his 15-game regular season in 2010 with 60 tackles (54 solo), 13.5 sacks, an interception returned for a touchdown and two forced fumbles. He needs to show even more production in the tackle department if heís going to rise up the rankings, but Matthews has the look of a player who isnít done improving. Heís clearly one of the best 3-4 outside linebackers available this year.

Matthews had a tremendous rookie season in 2009, recording 50 tackles and 10 sacks. He should get more playing time in 2010, but will also see more double teams. The Packers will need to find a rushing complement or his production might suffer.
