Blaine Gabbert: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Gabbert said there is "no question" he'll return to Jacksonville for the 2014 season, the Florida Times-Union reports. ďThis is a great team, a great staff and a great atmosphere and I want to be a part of it,Ē Gabbert said. ďWeíll see what this offseason entails, but Iíll be back here in April and ready to compete and get after it again.Ē

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

While Gabbert is still under contract through next season, many believe the team no longer considers him capable of handling the starting quarterback job. It seems more likely at this point that the Jags will look to unload Gabbert while retaining Chad Henne, who started 13 games, including all four Jacksonville wins. Regardless, the team is also expected to draft a quarterback in the first or second round, which could put Henne's job in jeopardy.
Gabbert (hamstring) is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the 49ers, the Jaguars' official site reports.

Coach Gus Bradley referred to Gabbert's hamstring issue as "week-to-week," the Florida Times-Union reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

We already know that Chad Henne will start Sunday's game against the Broncos, but the report hints at the possibility that Gabbert could miss time beyond Week 6. Meanwhile, when asked if Gabbert would return to the team's starting QB role when healthy, Bradley noted, "Right now, that's my thought. There are some crazy things that could happen, I guess." With the team 0-5, we'd assume that a win or two directed by Henne would be enough to keep him on the job, but the odds are stacked against him this week to say the least, with a road game against the undefeated Broncos on tap.

2013

Heading into the offseason, it was really a coin flip as to who will be the starting quarterback for the Jaguars in 2013, but for now, Gabbert will hold on to it. That said, the Jags' new staff has no loyalty to Gabbert, but he's also younger than Chad Henne. Gabbert improved in his second year in the league, increasing his completion rate by nearly eight percentage points and his YPA by more than a half-yard. Still, even after the improvement, his YPA was only 6.0, and the team's passing game didnít take off last year until Henne took over.

2012

Despite playing so cautiously as to average just 10.5 yards per completion (31st) as a rookie, Gabbert managed to connect on only 50.8 percent of his passes. Itís too early to write him off completely, but the juxtaposition of those numbers generally indicates a profound and perhaps unfixable lack of anticipation skills. Gabbert just didnít know how to read a defense last year, or at least was too afraid to stand in the pocket long enough to do so. This problem was evident in college, too. The additions of receivers Justin Blackmon and Laurent Robinson should help somewhat, but Gabbert needs to play with more confidence and better instincts, or Chad Henne will be throwing to them before long.

2011

Although it was a big surprise to see Gabbert fall to the 10th pick in the draft, itís still tough to see him stealing anything more than a start or two from David Garrard in 2011. Gabbert could have a lot to learn switching from Missouriís screen-heavy spread offense to a ball-control NFL offense, and itís not as if Garrard has been a huge liability as a starter. Unless Garrard regresses badly, he figures to be just good enough to stay on the field another year.
