James will train on his own in Texas, as the 49ers start their voluntary offseason conditioning program, CSN Bay Area reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

While the workouts are voluntary, James' absence does nothing to dispel the notion that he would welcome a fresh start with a new team, after being used sparingly by the 49ers since being made a second-round draft choice in 2012.
The 49ers are reportedly trying to deal James, csnbayarea.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Since being made a second-round pick by the 49ers in the 2012 draft, James has recorded just 39 carries for 184 yards in 14 regular season contests, while making his biggest impact with the team as a returner. Given that Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and perhaps Marcus Lattimore are ahead of James in the 49ers' RB pecking order heading into the 2014 season, a change of scenery would probably be a good thing for James, in both real and fantasy terms.
James carried the ball twice for 22 yards, returned one kickoff for 23 yards and five punts for a total of 51 yards against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Though none of the coaches have specifically said anything to him regarding his potential responsibilities, James has been spending extra time at practice working on his punt returning, CSN Bay Area reports. “You just got to be ready to go,” James said Thursday. "When I get on the field, I have to take advantage of my opportunities. And that's what I’m going to do."

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has already stated that he wants to get James involved more, both on offense and on special teams. With Frank Gore running like he's discovered the Fountain of Youth and Kendall Hunter looking solid as the primary backup, James is looking to make his mark anywhere he can. Regular return man Kyle Williams has struggled lately, fumbling a kickoff and muffing a punt during the win over Jacksonville just before the bye, so James could see an opportunity or two in the Week 10 matchup with the Panthers. His fantasy value is still extremely minimal right now, but the extra work in practice is going to reflect very well on him in the eyes of his coach.

2014

2013

Listed at 5-8, 194, James reportedly put on 10 pounds of muscle this offseason in order to improve his between-the-tackles running and pass-blocking skills. But there was never any doubt about his top-notch quickness, acceleration and long speed. For now, James and Kendall Hunter slot as backups to Frank Gore, but Gore's days of shouldering a monster workload are behind him, and Hunter is recovering from a torn Achilles' tendon. That means James should see more carries than a typical backup behind a huge and talented group of linemen. He'll also see some plays alongside Colin Kaepernick as a read-option threat, a formation that tends to open wide running lanes for back. And should Gore go down, James has a good deal of upside.

2012

Over his three years at Oregon, James totaled 5,665 yards with 57 touchdowns. The Ducks offense was anything but pro style, so there will be a major adjustment, but it’s hard to argue with that production. He’ll add much needed speed to the 49ers offense, but James also fights for yards after contact. Still, at 5-8, 194, and viewed as a “luxury” pick in the second round with Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and Brandon Jacobs also on the roster, James will be used mostly as a change-of-pace back as a rookie, likely becoming more of a presence on punt returns down the road as well.
