David Wilson: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Wilson (neck) declared via Twitter on Monday that he's been cleared for contact, the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Wilson will join the recently signed Rashad Jennings in the Giants' backfield this season, creating a potentially explosive duo for Eli Manning and company. The 23-year-old Wilson has been working out with the team during the offseason but hasn't participated in any contact drills, as he's been recovering from a surgically-repaired neck. He'll likely be eased back into action at first, with potentially stiff competition coming from Peyton Hillis and rookie Andre Williams. Wilson was a huge disappointment for owners last season, as ball-control issues limited him to 146 yards and just one touchdown over five games before he went down with the injury. He'll continue to make ball security a top priority as he competes for touches during camp.
Wilson hopes that an exam of his surgically-repaired neck slated for July 21 will clear him for contact in advance of training camp, ESPN.com reports.

Though Wilson (neck) still needs to gain medical clearance, GM Jerry Reese suggested that "all systems appear to be a go" with the running back, the Daily News reports.

Wilson (neck) was not cleared for contact by doctors following his MRI and examination Wednesday, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Wilson was hoping to gain clearance for full participation in the team's minicamp in two weeks, but it looks like he'll have to wait until at least training camp to get back on the field. Rashad Jennings is hardly secure in his perch atop the Giants' depth chart at running back, but Wilson's lack of productivity in his first two seasons -- not to mention his spinal condition -- will make it difficult for him to win a starting role to begin the 2014 campaign.
Wilson (neck) is scheduled for an MRI on Wednesday, at which point he could be cleared to play, the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Wilson has yet to be cleared for contact, but the running back expects that approval to finally come during Wednesday's doctor's visit. The former first-round pick expresses that he's experiencing no pain in his neck, which bodes well for him being cleared for full participation. If that proves true, Wilson will be able to stake his claim in the Giants' suddenly-crowded backfield, where Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hillis, and Andre Williams are all vying for touches.
Wilson (neck) has yet to be cleared for contact as of Thursday, Tom Rock of Newsday reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The Giants are currently embroiled in OTAs, but Wilson is merely watching from the sideline. However, general manager Jerry Reese stated in early May that Wilson is expected to be cleared by training camp, which could occur as early as his next doctor appointment Wednesday, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com. Once he reaches that state, Wilson will have to contend with Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hillis, and Andre Williams for backfield touches.
GM Jerry Reese indicated that he expects Wilson (neck) to be cleared for contact in advance of training camp, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The report notes that Wilson is already on the field taking reps, so once he's cleared for contact, he'll be able to make a case to reclaim a role in the Giants' ground game this coming season. When healthy, he can be a dynamic back but will have plenty of competition for touches, notably from free-agent addition Rashad Jennings, fourth-round draft pick Andre Williams, and veteran back Peyton Hillis.

2013

After last year's first-round pick fumbled on his second pro carry, the Giants limited Wilson to kick returns for most of the season. But when Andre Brown went on IR and Ahmad Bradshaw also went down, they got a glimpse of Wilson's explosive ability from the backfield. Despite seeing only 71 carries, Wilson's five rushes of 20-plus yards led Giants running backs even as Brown and Bradshaw averaged an impressive 5.3 and 4.6 YPC, respectively, running behind one of the league’s better run-blocking lines. With Bradshaw no longer on the team and Brown injured again, Wilson has a golden opportunity to lead the team's backfield out of the gate. Armed with dynamic acceleration, deceptive strength and open-field elusiveness, Wilson has the tools to post a big second-year campaign, especially given that Brown is sidelined indefinitely with a fractured leg he suffered in the Giants' preseason finale.

2012

Wilson busted out after a couple of nondescript seasons at Virginia Tech, Wilson busted out as a junior last year, rushing for 1,709 yards with nine touchdowns while getting 5.9 YPC. The former track star is extremely athletic, and he led all of college football in yards after contact last season. He had fumbling issues, and durability is also a concern, but the Giants let Brandon Jacobs leave via free agency, and it’s hard to argue with GM Jerry Reese’s track record when it comes to the draft. Taken in the first round, Wilson is expected to open 2012 behind Ahmad Bradshaw on the depth chart, but he’s a flier with plenty of upside.
