2016

Erstwhile starting quarterback and former first-round pick, Manuel is still employed by the Bills, but sharing the quarterback room with current starter Tyrod Taylor and the presumed future in 2016 draft pick Cardale Jones. On the plus side, GM Doug Whaley referred to Manuel as one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL.

2015

Manuel found himself benched in favor of Kyle Orton after just four games last season. The 2013 first-round pick was 2-2 in those starts but showed minimal growth from a decent rookie season. Through two years, he's averaged a meager 6.43 YPA and completed just 58.6 percent of his passes. While raw coming out of Florida State, Manuel has impressive physical tools: great velocity, soft touch, quick release, mobility (4.65 40) and prototypical size (6-5, 240). Alas, one-time long-shot candidate Tyrod Taylor landed the team's starting job thanks to a solid preseason, with Manuel and Matt Cassel now slated to work in a backup capacity.

2014

Considering the accuracy and progression issues he displayed at Florida State, Manuel was actually somewhat promising as a rookie, completing nearly 59 percent of his passes while posting more touchdowns (13) than turnovers (12). With a year's worth of experience and a second training camp on his side, Manuel should improve in 2014, especially since the team added Sammy Watkins with the fourth overall pick and traded for Mike Williams. Williams is a more legitimate red-zone target than the since-traded Steve Johnson, and Watkins should be one of the league's elite YAC threats immediately. The addition of second-round pick Cyrus Kouandjio at right tackle should also be useful for Manuel's development. Still, until he proves his progress, Manuel is firmly in QB2 territory.

2013

Throughout the entire draft season, it was quarterbacks Geno Smith, Ryan Nassib and Mike Glennon who received the majority of attention from the media. By late April, it was Manuel who got the last laugh as the only quarterback drafted in the first round. If Manuel holds on to job in Buffalo, he also has the best chance of any rookie to provide fantasy-relevant numbers due to his legs, but note that a knee procedure clouds his Week 1 status. Manuel, who rushed for 310 yards and four touchdowns in 2012 at Florida State, could easily eclipse those numbers in the NFL. New coach Doug Marrone also plans to install an up-tempo offense that could lead to more volume in the passing game.
