Tyler Eifert: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Eifert will soon have a minor procedure on his ankle, with a three-month recovery anticipated, the Cincinnati Inquirer reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Although the surgery isn't considered overly serious, Eifert will presumably miss most or all of training camp, with his Week 1 status now in serious question. He suffered the injury at the Pro Bowl on Jan. 31, but the Bengals initially believed it would heal with rest. Tyler Kroft is the leading candidate to take Eifert's first-team snaps during camp, with Ryan Hewitt and C.J. Uzomah possibly also in the mix. Coming off a 2015 receiving line of 52-615-13 in 13 games, Eifert may still be able to improve on last season's total of 72 targets, as the Bengals lost both Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones during the offseason. If Eifert isn't ready by Week 1, the Cincinnati receiving corps will look quite thin behind A.J. Green, which could be good news for Brandon LaFell and/or rookie Tyler Boyd.
The Bengals exercised the fifth-year option of Eifert's rookie contract Wednesday, Chris Wesseling of NFL.com reports.

Eifert injured his lower left leg during Sunday's Pro Bowl, leaving Aloha Stadium in a walking boot, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports. "I don't really know what happened," Eifert said. "I jammed my heel. I'll be good."

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

After recording his first Pro Bowl catch in the fourth quarter, Eifert was targeted on the very next play by Jameis Winston but was unable to corral a potential 35-yard touchdown. Eifert exhibited an evident limp as he went to the sideline, where his foot was iced until he was transported to the locker room in the waning minutes in order to undergo an X-ray. The initial exam was returned negative, but he'll have additional tests performed once he returns to Cincinnati to determine the extent of the injury.
Eifert secured five of eight targets for 58 yards in Saturday's 18-16 wild-card loss to the Steelers.

2015

2014

Eifert turned in a solid rookie season, acclimating to the NFL game alongside tight-end mate Jermaine Gresham. They produced similar numbers, though Eifert got more work in the red zone and averaged more yards per catch and per target. With A.J. Green drawing double teams and safety help downfield, both had free reign in the middle of the field and down the seam. Eifert averaged 6.26 yards after the catch (second among qualified TE) while Gresham averaged 6.13 (fifth). At 6-6 with good speed, Eifert has the size to exploit defensive backs and the quickness to outmaneuver linebackers. He could distance himself from Gresham this season, as the four-year veteran is in the last year of contract. If so, Eifert will be in a good position to produce.

2013

Taken with the 21st overall pick, Eifert was the clear-cut top tight end in this year's draft. His career at Notre Dame included several acrobatic catches as Eifert has excellent body control and consistently wins the ball in traffic. Eifert's value will be limited in 2013 with the presence of Jermaine Gresham, but look for the Bengals to use more two tight-end sets to get him involved in the offense.
