Fiedler has shoulder surgery at the end of last season to repair a torn labrum. If he shows he's healthy, he'll start the year as the Bucs' second-string quarterback behind Chris Simms.
He will be the primary back-up, and provide the team with security if he is suddenly needed in the lineup. The 33 year-old veteran is mobile, smart, and has enough experience to guide the team if his skills are required. He is a solid insurance policy if Pennington encounters an injury.
Like Jason or Freddy, Fiedler seems sure to resurface in the nightmares of Dolphins fans so eager to turn the page. Fiedler makes enough plays with his legs to deserve fantasy backup consideration if (or when) he's the Miami starter.
Miami is now established as a team that relies on Ricky Williams and the running game, especially in the red zone (the Dolphins ran the ball 63 percent in the red zone last year; tops in the AFC), and Fiedler is seldom asked to throw more than 25 to 30 passes per game, which makes him a marginal pick, at best, in yardage leagues. Moreover, the Dolphins signed Brian Griese in early June, and while Fiedler is still the favorite to begin the season as Miami's starter, he'll be on a lot shorter leash should he struggle early on.
