Cook did not see regular-season action through the entirety of the 2017 campaign, ultimately dressing for just one game as he remained in the third spot of the quarterback depth chart behind Derek Carr and EJ Manuel. Cook once again profiles as the Raiders' No. 3 option at the helm heading into 2018 due to the experience of the duo in front of him.
Making his first career NFL start in the wild-card round of the 2016 playoffs, Cook's inexperience and mechanical flaws were exposed by a tough Texans defense as he completed just 18-of-45 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown to go along with three interceptions. Starting quarterback Derek Carr's primary backup (Matt McGloin) departed during free agency, but the Raiders signed former first-rounder EJ Manuel from the Bills in order to compete for the No. 2 role. Despite Cook having already spent a year learning the Raiders' system, Manuel's signing doesn't bode well for the Michigan State product's chances at seeing the field if Carr gets hurt again.
Cook was selected in the fourth round by the Raiders with the 100th overall pick in the 2016 Draft. While Derek Carr has the starting job at quarterback locked down heading into the season, Cook figures to battle with four-year veteran Matt McGloin for the second-string title. The former Michigan State Spartan heads to Oakland as the winningest quarterback in school history, compiling a 34-5 record during three seasons in East Lansing.
