RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for Billy Miller.

2009

Miller was productive while filling in for the injured Jeremy Shockey much of last year, catching 45 passes for 579 yards. With Shockey healthy at press time, Miller will again fill a backup role, but given Shockey’s propensity to miss time, there’s a decent chance Miller will be called on at some point this season. The 32-year old Miller doesn’t have much speed or athleticism, but he’s got decent hands, and in New Orleans there’s a lot of passing yards to go around.

2008

Though Miller was the Saints No. 2 tight end last year behind Eric Johnson, he still managed to catch 27 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns, actually outperforming Johnson over certain stretches. That being said, Miller is still nothing more than a backup in an offensive scheme that doesn't heavily utilize tight ends.

2007

Miller split time with Mark Campbell at tight end last year, catching just 14 passes for 129 yards in an offense that pays little attention to the tight end. He is likely to be even less productive this season, as the team signed Eric Johnson during the offseason to be the team's starting tight end. Though Johnson is very injury prone, Miller's fantasy value would be very limited even if Johnson were to get hurt.

2006

The Saints have an abundance of tight ends, and Miller is on the low end of the totem pole. He would have to leapfrog at least four other Saints on the depth chart before he had any fantasy value this season.

2005

In 2002, Miller Houston’s biggest receiving threat. Andre Johnson’s arrival marginalized Miller to the point where he caught just 17 passes last season. Cut by the Texans, Miller caught on with the Browns where he has a chance to re-emerge as a solid pass-catching TE.

2004

Miller entered 2003 as a viable option at tight end, but he caught 11 fewer passes and gained 258 fewer yards than in 2002, though his touchdowns remained the same. His production suffered from the addition of 2003 first-round draft pick WR Andre Johnson and the emergence of a running game and receiver out of the backfield in Domanick Davis. Miller will also be in competition with Bennie Joppru, a second-round pick in 2003 from Michigan, who sat out the entire season with a groin injury and free agent Mark Bruener.

2003

Other than David Carr surviving an NFL-record 76 sacks, the emergence of Miller in 2002 was the only highlight on offense for the Texans. Miller led Houston with 51 catches (32 in his final eight games) and was second in receiving yards with 613. The club added other options for Carr in the offseason, signing RB Stacey Mack and drafting WR Andre Johnson from Miami with the third overall pick in the draft. Houston also added TE Bennie Joppru from the University of Michigan in the second round. Joppru will be more of a blocker, while Miller is the receiving tight end. The added options should help bump Miller's numbers. Ultimately, it depends on the offensive line giving Carr the time, but he and Miller will continue to hook up in 2003.
