RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Emmitt Smith.

2004

The future Hall-Of-Famer enters the 2004 season with the starting job over Marcel Shipp, but nobody expects him to hold it for long. A change in the offensive scheme will have the line cutting and chopping more than driving forward, and Smith, the more experienced back, should have greater success as a slasher, given his penchant for finding holes from cracks. But time is not on his side and itís doubtful he could sustain the workload of a No. 1 without injury.

2003

Just a few months after clearing the deck for Marcel Shipp, the Cardinals decided to waste some of their precious salary cap room on Smith, the 13-year veteran from Dallas who comes with over 4,000 NFL carries on his odometer. Smith has averaged less than four yards a carry his last two seasons and is no longer a solid short-yardage back (in his heyday he was the arguably the best short-yardage option in the NFL). Nonetheless, the Cardinals saw something they liked, so they signed him to a two-year, $8 million contract.
