Knight is an excellent tackler; he has 90 or more stops in five of his last seven seasons. Knight hasn't missed a game since 1998 and averages almost four picks per season. He will turn 33 in September but still ranks among the NFL's best safeties. You’re getting consistency if you draft Knight. He will play for the Giants in 2008, his third team in the last three years. A potential concern is the fact that the Giants have a good defense, but while that might mean fewer tackles for Knight, the good news is that it could free him for more interception opportunities.
In the last 10 years, Knight has been a top-20 IDP defensive back just about every single season. He's topped 100 total tackles three times and 90 four more times. He's never failed to make an interception in a season, and has had six twice and five three times. So suffice to say, the Chiefs cut him not for lack of ability but because they didn't want to pay for him. The Jags will get a hard-hitting, instinctual safety with, albeit diminishing, ability to move fluidly and seize opportunities for interceptions. Another bonus: Knight hasn't missed a game since 1998.
Knight remains active on defense, but he could lose time, or his job, to rookie Bernard Pollard, whom the team is extremely high on.
The Chiefs signed Knight in the offseason to greatly bolster their secondary. The former Trojan will step right in and become the team's starting strong safety. A veteran and former Pro Bowler, Knight will not only add experience and toughness to the secondary, but he'll also bring leadership to a defense that desperately needed it. Expect Knight to put together solid numbers in his first year in Kansas City.
How good Knight was last year depends on whom you ask. Tackles being an unofficial stat, the various counting authorities have different numbers that usually aren't very far apart. For Knight, the NFL has 64 solo stops listed for 2003 and STATS, Inc. lists 78 (we're using the latter in these articles) so he was either mediocre or turned in another top-20 year. Previously, he was the 80-solo-tackle type no matter whom you asked, and his interceptions have always been numerous (5, 6, 5 and 3 in the past four years), so whichever it was in 2003, we think 2004 will be productive.
Knight puts up big fantasy numbers year after year, and 2002 was no exception with 82 tackles, five interceptions and two sacks. It remains to be seen how the move into Miami's all world secondary will affect his numbers, but as long as he stays healthy, we don't see a big decline.
