Davis has value as a long threat in the receiving game, but lost snaps to Jacoby Jones in 2009. Injuries cost him time on the field and forced a job-share situation in the kick-return game -- a role in which Davis has had some success. The Texans picked up two more wideouts in the NFL draft, including a kick-return specialist (Trindon Holliday), leaving Davis having to win his job during preseason.
Davis will be a backup long ball threat at wideout, while doubling as an experienced kick returner. Given a full season of health from Andre Johnson, as was the case in 2008, Davis doesn't figure to be targeted all that often.
Davis will be battling with Jacoby Jones for the third spot on the depth chart. The most likely scenario for Davis would be to duplicate last season's production of 33 receptions for 583 yards. Davis should still hold some value as a kick returner and will become an interesting option if any injuries befall the Texans' receiving corp.
Houston becomes the fourth different team for Davis in four seasons. With little in the way of established veterans at wide receiver on the roster, Davis emerged as the team's fifth wideout and can also return kicks if needed.
Davis will likely have to beat out Peerless Price for the #2 spot, but that's not too far-fetched given Price's downfall the last few seasons. Roscoe Parrish, Josh Reed and Sam Aiken are seemingly more suited for a #3 receiver/special teams role. Davis is fast and has had rays of success before, though injuries have set him back on a few occasions. He could be a decent sleeper if he can beat out Price, which is no sure bet. Perhaps the best thing for Davis would be if Kelly Holcomb wins the starting quarterback job, as those two are familiar with each other from their Cleveland days. Update: Davis made the team but will start the season as a reserve, seemingly the fifth or sixth wideout with a possibility to move up if Price or Reed should stumble.
After finding himself the odd man out in Cleveland, Davis was dealt to New England. The upside is still there for Davis, but the Pats' receiving corps is crowded, so injuries will need to hit before he gets his chance.
Davis has more measureables than any other Browns receiver. There’s on-the-field evidence of this, too. Last year, 65 percent of the 62 passes thrown his way were completed (just 48 percent for Quincy Morgan). Davis also has the size to dominate in the red zone (four TDs on his five catches inside the 20).
He's part of a talented group of four wideouts, who will all see regular time on the field. The real issue is how much of a running team Cleveland will be in 2003. In order to keep a young defense off the field, there will be an emphasis on the running game.
