Najeh Davenport: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Davenport may get the bulk of carries this week against Tennessee with Joseph Addai likely to be rested, Dominic Rhodes out with a chest injury and Chad Simpson struggling with an ankle injury.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

We expect the Colts to treat Sunday's game against Tennessee like a preseason game since Indy has already clinched their playoff position. Indy will probably play their starters for about a quarter and then go with backups the rest of the way. Davenport may be featured in the second and third quarter, but head coach Tony Dungy said running back Lance Ball may be signed from the practice squad. As a result, we're not sure Davenport is a good option even for those desperate for help at running back the final week.
Davenport could return kickoffs this week against Detroit and could even back up Dominic Rhodes with Joseph Addai and Chad Simpson hurt. "We've got Joseph a little banged up, and Chad Simpson got a sprained ankle on his last kickoff return," head coach Tony Dungy told the team's official web site. "He may not be able to go, either. There's a chance Najeh could be playing right away. We'll get him up to speed as quickly as we can."

The Steelers officially signed Davenport on Tuesday.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Davenport will likely be utilized on special teams as a kick returner and as a backup to Mewelde Moore and Carey Davis in Week 5. The team will first gauge his fitness level before making any decisions on where, or even if, he plays against Jacksonville. Pittsburgh released Davenport before training camp after taking Rashard Mendenhall with its first-round draft choice in April. He also battled off-field issues last season, something that also influenced the Steelers' decision to release him.

RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

There was no outlook written for Najeh Davenport.

2007

After Davenport signed in Pittsburgh, many envisioned him taking over Jerome Bettis’ short-yardage role. Instead, Willie Parker excelled at the goal line (10-for-21), leaving Davenport with little to do. He’s a fine blocker, and even a decent receiver, so despite his size, he’s become a third-down back in Pittsburgh. He struggled to stay healthy in the past but has also impressed at times. In 2007, he’s strictly insurance for Parker owners, assuming he beats out Kevan Barlow.

2006

Davenport had a golden opportunity to establish himself as Green Bay’s No. 1 running back when Ahman Green went down, but after rushing for 54 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of his first start of the season, Davenport broke his ankle and was lost for the year. When healthy, Davenport’s a powerful, bruising runner who can chew up yardage (5.1 career YPC prior to last season) and do some damage in the red zone (the sample size is negligible, but he scored twice on three carries inside the 5 last year). Davenport was released by the Packers in early September.

2005

The often injured Davenport got hurt again last season right after he was asked to step in for an injured Ahman Green. Davenport looks good when he plays, but he has a tough time staying healthy. He is good insurance to have on your team if you also have Ahman Green.

2004

Ahman Green's top backup.
