James brings nine years of NFL experience (111 starts) to Houston where he'll compete for a starting inside linebacker job. By trading DeMeco Ryans to Philadelphia, the Texans have a need for someone like James, though Darryl Sharpton as an inside bead on the Ryans' old job. One thing to consider is that James has experience with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips when the two were in the Dallas organization.
James is one of the league's most reliable defenders, as he has started 96 consecutive regular season games for Dallas and has hit triple-digit tackles five straight years. That includes three consecutive seasons of at least 110 tackles. The thumper should remain a steady presence against the run in Dallas’ defense, but he’s limited in coverage and hasn’t been an effective blitzer since totaling eight sacks in 2008. And with second-round picks Sean Lee and Bruce Carter closing in, James’ snaps figure to decrease a significant amount this year. His arrow is clearly pointed downward.
The acquisition of Keith Brooking cut into James’ use as a pass rusher in 2009; his sack total fell from a career-high eight in 2008 to just two in 2009. But for the fourth straight season, James racked up more than 100 tackles, including a 12-tackle performance in Dallas’ shutout of the Redskins in Week 15. Depending on how often he’s called upon to blitz, James should rank as a good-to-very good IDP option this season.
The Dallas defense racked up sacks at a ridiculous rate last season, and Bradie James was a big reason why. James more than doubled his previous career high with eight – an outstanding total for an inside linebacker. He set a career best in tackles as well, with 116, topping the 100-tackle mark for the third straight season. James finished last season strong, as well, with five sacks and three games of double-digit tackles in the last five weeks. On tackles alone, James is a credible IDP selection – the potential for sacks gives him top-tier upside.
Recorded 101 tackles and three sacks as the Cowboys' anchor at middle linebacker.
James emerged as the Cowboys' defensive captain in 2006, recording 101 tackles and adding one INT.
James had his best season in 2005, recording 93 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks -- the Cowboys will be looking for him to take another step forward this year.
Third-year player battling for a starting spot alongside Dat Nguyen in the new 3-4 defense at MLB -- if he wins it, he could be a decent source of sacks and tackles.
James, a 2003 draft pick, will play a bigger role on defense this year and might even push Dexter Coakley aside as the weakside LB.
