RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Matt Wilhelm.
Wilhelm will most likely back up Patrick Willis at inside linebacker, but he could be out of a roster spot if a couple other players step up during training camp.
Wilhelm had 51 tackles and one interception in 2008, but his production in 2009 will depend on whether or not he can win a starting role in training camp.
In his first season as a starter, Willhelm started 14 games in 2007 and finished second on the squad with 144 tackles. He also recorded three interceptions, a sack and four tackles for loss.
With the departure of Donnie Edwards, the talented Wilhelm is slated to become a starting inside linebacker. He hasn't played a whole lot in his four-year career, but he is a favorite of general manager A.J. Smith, and will not be asked to do a whole lot on a very talented defense.
Though the coaching staff and his teammates acknowledge that Wilhelm is good enough to be a starter at inside linebacker, he is stuck behind superstar Donnie Edwards. For now, he will need to be content with spelling the starters and making big hits on special teams.
Wilhelm is a reserve linebacker who only saw action in seven games last year. Expect more of the same this year.
Wilhelm will try to make the team as a backup linebacker again in 2004.
