Hayward should see his playing time decrease as 2009 goes on, as second-year players Quentin Groves and Derrick Harvey take over the starting DE spots.
Hayward's time as an effective pass-rusher could be nearing its end, given the drafting of standout DEs Quentin Groves and Derrick Harvey.
When healthy, Hayward is one of the more underrated sack artists in the NFL. However, he enters 2007 coming off a ruptured Achilles' tendon that limited him to only one game in 2006. Keep a close watch on Hayward in training camp, and if it seems he has returned to form, then he could be an optimal sack-producing IDP in 2007.
Hayward figured to be the Jaguars sack leader for 2006. Unfortunately, a ruptured achilles in Week 1 ended his prematurly. He will be replaced in the starting line-up by Rob Meier.
Hayward was considered the top defensive end on the free agent market when he was signed by the Jaguars this past offseason. He recorded 10.5 sacks last year and will undoubtedly help to bolster the team's pass rush this season. Expect similar, if not better numbers out of Hayward this season, as he will receive a great deal of support from the up and coming Jaguars defensive line.
If Hayward opens the season as the starter, he's a sleeper for individual defensive player leagues. Hayward takes over the same position that Bertrand Berry, who signed with the Cardinals this offseason, held last season and led the team with 11.5 sacks. The right side of the defensive line benefits from one-on-one blocking as Trevor Pryce commands the double teams on the left side.
Hayward will battle Betrand Berry for the starting job at the weak-side defensive end.
