Hicks will fill the departed Mewelde Moore's role in Minnesota's offense as a quick, pesky back with the ability to take advantage of his opportunities when called upon. He is one of the top candidates to see time in return duty and could see a decent amount of touches on offense if either Adrian Peterson or Chester Taylor were to get hurt, both of whom are relatively injury prone.
Hicks has shown flashes in his two seasons with the 49ers of being a solid back-up running back and kickoff returner, two roles he will fill again if he makes the squad. He will battle Michael Robinson and Thomas Clayton to be Frank Gore's backup.
Hicks has shown that he can step in and be productive on special teams and at running back, when given the chance. Still struggles at time with blitz pickup and is somewhat undersized and will be the team's #3 back behind Frank Gore and Kevan Barlow and may only see time if both are injured or struggle mightily during the season.
Rocketed from practice squad player to starting running back in 2004 before ending up back on the bench. Not big enough and struggles with blitz pick up too often to start and may have fallen behind Frank Gore on the depth chart. May be the team's primary kick returner.
