RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
The 30-year old veteran cornerback is expected to return to his starting job in 2013 although rumors have circulated this offseason about the possibility of the team trading him. He's averaged 51 tackles per season over the last three years and while he sees regular snaps as a starter, his fantasy value is somewhat limited.
Rogers will start at right cornerback. He'll provide more help against the run than in coverage, but the Rogers signing filled a major hole in the 49ers' secondary.
Rogers had a very quiet 2009, recording zero interceptions, sacks, or fumbles. He enters 2010 as a restricted free agent and has made it known he is not happy about his contract situation and skipped several voluntary workouts. He will start alongside DeAngelo Hall in 2010. New Defensive Coordinate Jim Haslett expects to force more turnovers but Rogers is known for his poor hands. He has six career interceptions over 66 games.
Rogers successfully returned from reconstructive knee surgery. He matured as a player and spent more time in the film room. This resulted in a career year. He still drops too many potential interceptions but the good news is he was rarely beat down field. He had a career high 24 passes defensed in 2008 even after losing time to DeAngelo Hall in the second half of the season. He will start opposite Hall in 2009.
Rogers is returning from reconstructive knee surgery (ACL and MCL). He is expected to be ready for the season opener. It's uncertain how effective he will be upon returning as a cornerback's quickness and ability to change directions define success.
Rogers has been a disappointment in his two years with the Redskins. He was drafted in the first round and has failed to live up to the billing of a shut down corner. He consistently gets beat on deep routes and has dropped too many easy interceptions to count. He will compete with Shawn Springs and Fred Smoot for the starting cornerback positions but is expected to fill the third slot. He is good insurance for when Springs suffers his annual injury and has to sit out a few games. Rogers is going to have to turn it around soon in order to avoid being labeled a bust. If he works on his play recognition and catching he may be able to produce a good season.
Starting cornerback. A 2005 first round draft pick Rogers looked like a rookie most of last season. He showed flashes of brilliance mixed with amateur mistakes. Expect him to take a big step in his sophomore year as he better understands the nuances of Defensive Head Coach Gregg Williams' schemes.
Rogers is a big cornerback that has enough speed to cover most receivers. In college he was a playmaker with the ability to make a key interception or deliver a big hit. He is expected to be the Redskins number two cornerback once he adjusts to the NFL. He is in a similar situation to safety Sean Taylor last year. Taylor started the season in a backup role but within a few games was in the starting lineup. Expect the same with Rogers.
