Smith stands a strong chance of making the final Philadelphia roster thanks to his ability to make a big impact as a kick returner and gunner. He can also provide emergency quarterback depth on game day.
Smith (ribs) was placed on season-ending injured reserve in August of 2013. In July, Smith agreed to a restructured contract that will keep him in Buffalo for the foreseeable future.
Coach Chan Gailey pretty much locked Smith into the No. 3 quarterback role this season Smith could also see an occasional look out wide - he sometimes practices at receiver - and will spend time on special teams, but it looks like Wildcat quarterback will be his main use. There's little fantasy value there, but he's likely to be a key cog for the Bills' success this season. This all also means that one of Vince Young or Tyler Thigpen isn't likely to be with the team once the regular season hits.
Smith’s primary position for the Bills will be quarterback, but that’s not all he will do, as he's expected to be the Bills' "slash" guy in 2011. Smith will probably be the Wildcat quarterback and occasionally split out at wide receiver while also being his usual special teams stud, even as a returner, but even when you add all that up it probably won't give him much fantasy value.
The Jets like to use Smith as one of those gadgety "slash" players - sometimes the trick plays work, sometimes they don't. But Smith has never shown enough of an upside at any one position for us to see him as more than a No. 4 or No. 5 receiver. You might put him on the bottom of your cheat sheet, but we doubt you'll wind up scratching the name off.
Coming off a 12-catch season (in 15 games), it's time to peel the sleeper label off Smith. He's a candidate to claim the Jets' No. 3 WR job, and he has some "Wildcat" type skills, but this figures to be a run-first team regardless of who the QB is between Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens.
New York's version of "slash" is still picking up the pro game and the position - he was a quarterback in college. When he got a brief chance to start in 2007, not much happened (11 receptions). Nonetheless he'll probably be the team's No. 3 WR this fall, and that means he could be worth a late-round flier in very deep groups. Smith does have adequate size and speed for the position.
It's taken a while for him to settle into the "Slash" role, in part because the Jets really don't know how to use Smith. But we like his athleticism and his hands, and in a very deep dynasty league we wouldn't mind spending a late pick on him.
He was a quarterback at Missouri but the Jets are converting him to the wide receiver position. The athletic rookie could wind up being a "slash" type of player for the Jets this year.
