ANALYSIS
With Dont’a Hightower back in the Patriots' lineup, Carpenter was the odd man out. If he doesn't catch on elsewhere in short order, it's not hard to imagine Carpenter resurfacing with New England later in the season if/when the team is looking for some added linebacking depth.

Carpenter -- a first-rounder back in 2006 -- is a versatile linebacker who gives the team some added depth at the position, but IDP relevance seems unlikely. His career high in tackles is 46.
Carpenter returns to the Lions after being an in-season addition a year ago. He'll be a reserve linebacker and see action in the nickel package.
Carpenter is currently penciled in as the club's starting weak-side linebacker but he'll have hefty competition from Larry Grant during training camp.
Former first round pick will get his last chance to prove he can fill a regular role on defense with Kevin Burnett's departure.
Depth LB/special teams player.
Carpenter didn't produce like a first round pick, netting just 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks as a rookie. He'll try to find a more productive role under new head coach Wade Phillips.
The Cowboys' first-round pick in 2006, Carpenter will still have to fight to prove himself amongst a crowded Dallas LB corps. If he gets regular playing time he's got the size and skills to be a potential IDP pickup.
